computer problem

Good Morning Everybody...I have a problem with my computer that defies a solution by local experts and I am looking for help. Briefly, my cheap surge protector failed to do its job during a recent storm, resulting in the loss of a functioning mouse. I have tried replacements to no avail. I don't have a cursor (arrow) to click on "Restore Active Desktop" or for that matter, anything else. My computer is old and I have a new one on the way but I would like to access my old files, addresses, favorites, etc.

I am an infrequent poster on this forum, and an everyday reader of your posts, so I thought it would be ok to post my dilemma here. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. David

I'm assuming here that your computer is a desktop and that the mouse has a serial interface, rather than USB. If this is the case, installing an expansion card with USB slots and then using a mouse with a USB interface might get the job done.

Hello Sparks and Bola Blanca...thanks for your input but neither approach worked. I had a tech person look at it and he said that it was scorched. I appreciate your suggestions. Thanks. David

Aint that the truth Sparks. Be careful folks. If possible, before choosing a tech for a repair get a recommendation. But don't get it from typical person our age who knows very little about computers, but from a techie like Sparks, who has been in the business much of his life

OK, I hear you guys. Now, how is this for a kicker; I called Dell to see why my new computer had not showed-up...they had no record of my having purchased one. Talk about frustrating but I will give it another shot. Hope springs eternal! David

If they didn't charge your credit card ... I bought a nice Compaq at Sorianas for about $750us. No flat screen and no R/W DVD but plenty good for me
