Chavela Vargas tomorrow in Guadalajara

Can't Post | Private Reply
Friday evening at the Teatro Diana, the great Mexican songstress, Chavela Vargas, will be performing. I've always thought of her as the Edith Piaf of Mexico because of her voice and delivery, although the songs she sings are more of the traditional Mexican variety. If you don't know her, she appeared in the film about Frida Kahlo with Selma Hayak. In the DVD, she does a very good interview about her friendship with Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo. I last saw her live in Mexico City in a smoky nightclub in 1968. She is awesome.

FYI, ticketmaster shows that the event has been cancelled and it does not appear on the event list of Teatro Diana.

I called the theater to see if they knew if she cancelled due to illness. The person who answered the phone only knew that the performance had been cancelled, but not why.

What a shame. She is a living legend and rarely sings in public these days.

Hmmmm...Piaf? I just don't hear it. She may have been great in 1968, but she is a bit past prime as the following link will attest:

Anyway, a musical weekend is not lost. The Jalisco Philharmonic has 3 Sunday afternoon concerts this month. This Sunday at beautifully refurbished Teatro Degollado features Verde's Sicilian Vespers, the Brahms double concerto,& Stravinsky's Firebird. Show time is 12:30

You know, the woman is 87 years old and still touring. She's a living legend.

Give her a break. I just hope she's well.

I think she is fantastic! I thought of her as the Billie Holliday of Mexico because of the whiskey voice, either will work. I enjoyed the stories of her affair with Frida, of the spaniard that went looking for her and found her singing for drinks in a bar in Mexico, brought her to Spain where she cleaned up and he started recording her. What a life she has had, I hope it continues much longer.

She probably dislikes Paris, too. But I answered my own question when I found her music available through artistdirect.com

Sure. When I lived in the US, I used to buy her CDs at Barnes and Noble or Borders. I think I've seen them on Amazon, too.

Chavela sang at Carnegie Hall a few years ago to a standing-room-only crowd and I have to tell you - I've never experienced Carnegie Hall filled with such incredible energy. She made many a grown-man cry that night.

I have also seen her in Barcelona and yes, the Spaniards adore her. Almodovar used her in "Talk to Her", and I think she may live there at least part time.

I'd pay big money to see her again. Hope the Guadalajara show gets re-scheduled for you.

If you are a fan of Chavela Vargas then you would probably enjoy seeing Gabriela Gomez. She sings all of the old songs and has a tequila voice that will astonish you with her range and power. I haven't been to see her for a few weeks but she was playing La Tasca on Sunday afternoons from 3 pm to 6 pm. She is a National treasure. Not that her voice or music is like this but seeing her reminds me of my student days in Chicago going to little blues clubs and seeing people like Junior Wells and Hound Dog Taylor. In fact, now that I think about it, she does remind me a bit of Koko Taylor for her heart, power and soul. I hope that you like it and if you find that she is playing anywhere else please let us all know where and when.

Chavela has to be seen, she is biger than life, listening to a CD does not do her justice. Once in a while canal 22 or canalOnce will show one of her interviews and some of her concerts. . They also re run some of her concert in Guanajuato from a few years ago. Do not miss these shows. She has the same incredible connection with the audience Piaf , Amalia Rodriguez or Oum Kalsoum had.

I've not heard of her before this forum, thus my trip to Amazon to hear some samples. I will certainly yield to you long-time fans.
