I'm not there now but it has worked for me in the city in the past. Last November I was there and it worked fine. The year before I was there for over a month (partly in Zapopan west of the city) and it worked fine. Are you having a problem?

We've used XM all over Mexico and had very few areas that it consistently faded out. One of those is across the bottom of the Yucatan peninsula, from just outside of Villahermosa most of the way to Chetumal it is not a strong signal, it fades in and out. It does work in Palenque, west into Chiapas and up the east coast of Quintana Roo. It also works in Belize and Guatemala. Other than fades in the mountains when you are on the wrong side of a hill, deep in a canyon or right up under a cliff, it has worked well everywhere.

I love my XM!

I currently live on Cozumel and it works fine here. But, I am seriously considering relocating to the Guadalajara area and since I love my XM too - thought I should ask. Thanks for your reply.

We live most of the year in our RV traveling but do spend part of the winter in a condo we own in Akumal, QR. I'll wave across the water at you when we get there later this month, I can barely see the tip of the island from my deck as it is a little north of us, I do like watching the cruise ships at night as they pull in and out of Cozumel.

Make sure you wave. Speaking of watching the cruise ships and at the risk of offending those that love to sail on them; most of us, with the exception of those directly emplyed by their servicers, would love to see them sail away..a long way. This includes Mexicanos as well as expats. We are now a major cruise ship port and Cozumel allows the cruise ships and the stores that sell to the passengers to do things that are not done in any other Caribbean Port. They have changed the island from a well known dive destination that attracted divers from all over the world to one that now is losing approximately 5-8% of our "old" divers each year. The industry has done more to injure the reefs and environment than can be imagined. That is one of the reasons that I am seriously considering relocation. I love Mexico and Cozumel has been my home for over 7 years. But, at the rate this situation is progressing...it's time to move on and the Guadalajara area is looking better all the time. Akumal is still a great place but you will be surprised how much growth has been experienced by the Riviera Maya since your last visit. But..be sure to wave, I will be here until Spring most likely.

I agree with you that the cruise ships have ruined Cozumel to a great degree. I first came to that part of Mexico because I was a diver and the reefs around Cozumel were world class, some of them may still be although they are under enormous stress. On one dive trip we came over to the mainland to go cave diving and I found Akumal, fell in love with it as it was then and a few years later bought a place. I was last there in April of this year so not too much will have changed but the changes are still visible with even a few months absence. I'm afraid that the coast I first fell in love with 12 years ago is now overloved by too many. I too am considering selling and looking for a place elsewhere in Mexico. I have a short list and Guadalajara is high on that list for me as well.

I can't blame others for loving the same area I love or the Mexicans for capitalizing on it but I do wish that more of the money went to the people who live and work there. This trend towards cruise ships and all inclusive resorts really cuts out the small businesses in the area. Anyway, I too think it is time to move on.

Maybe this is getting off track for this board, but the situation that you and I both are aware of in Cozumel and the Riviera Maya perhaps will make others aware that development for development sake is not good. Especially if it destroys the very reasons that an area is desirable.
With all inclusives and cruise ships (and especially the stores that cater to their passengers) we find that the majority of the monies spent here - do not stay here. The small tiendas, eateries, and other Mexico Tipico attractions are rapidly being put out of business. The reefs are being damaged and everyone is complaining. But the Mexican saying: "If you have enough $ you can make a dog dance and if not - the dog makes you dance" certainly applies to our situation.

Yes, I think it's time to move on. Even Guadalajara, sprawling and industrialized as it is, has not forgotten or displaced it's past. That is to be commended.
