Fish

Can't Post | Private Reply
I buy a lot of fresh fish at the local coop. What I cannot figure out is some of the fish do not look like anything I have seen before. I ask the name and they tell me and I look it up in a dictionary/translator but to no avail. I cannot find out what it is.

Today I bought Palmeta and Chopo!

I wonder what I am eating but they sure are fresh and good.

Anyone got any ideas on where to look for a English name for these fish. I have tried Google but that did not help. Some how I do not think that Rolly covers this like he does other things.

Palmeta = permit or round pompano

Chopo seems to be a local or regional fish name. It's also the Spanish name of one of Santa's reindeer.

This site might help in the future, although the two names you asked about are absent...

Rudolpho was the creation of some song writer. He was not in the original poem.

"And he whistled, and shouted, and called them by name;
Now, Dasher! now, Dancer! now, Prancer and Vixen!
On, Comet! on Cupid! on, Donder and Blitzen!"

"Ay Pancho, ay Pepe, ay Cuco, ay Beto,
ay Chato, ay Chopo, Macuco y Nieto!"

What a way to hijack a thread about fish!

Yeah, I know Rolly. I was just joshing ya. I do like the Mexican names though. Sounds a lot more musical. I just happened to like Gene Autrys song, and always include Rudolpho cause I grew up with him....

Cazon = a kind of shark = dogfish shark; sometimes written tiburon cazon

Tiburon = shark in general

Thanks. I have eaten it in restaurants and it's OK. Mostly white meat with a streak of soft red in the filet.

If you order “fish and chips” in Europe, for example, you’ll probably be eating spiny dogfish shark meat.

"Dog Fish" is called "Rock Salmon" in England, so you would only get it, if you specifically ordered rock saman' and chips.

Instead of :

Place, Haddock, Cod, Cod roe, Sole, Skate, Huss, Whiting, ETC'
