Bartolemé de las Casas, a Spanish colonist, a priest, and first Bishop of Chiapas, was a scholar, historian and 16th century human rights advocate. Las Casas has been called the father of anti-imperialism and anti-racism. He was an early and energetic advocate and activist for the rights of native peoples.

For a time, he brought about the end of the encomienda (indigenous slave labor) system used by the Spanish. Las Casas is a shining example of resistance to the ill treatment of native peoples.

More than four hundred years after his death, the indigenous people of Chiapas continue to struggle for the rights Bartolomé de las Casas believed were theirs.

San Cristóbal de las Casas bears his name.

Re: [quevedo] Un retablo en Santo Domingo

The Dominican order played an important role in the Christianization of Chiapas. The church of Santo Domingo is a jewel of Baroque art. When I visited it, the beautiful facade was receiving a complete overhaul. The inside was as enchanting as ever, as the picture of this golden altarpiece testifies.

Comments? Translations? All welcome!

I was in San Cristobal de las Casas about the time you was there. I liked the town so much that I am moving there in April. The town has soul.
