I live in New Orleans, LA and have signed up for Skype internet phone service. It now offers free calls within the US and Canada until the end of this year. Since you all have a secondary NOB mail address, you should be able to sign up using it and your mexconnect.com email address.

It works great. www.skype.com/products/skypeout/

Good Luck,

"Since you all have a secondary NOB mail address"

Please understand that not all foreigners living in Mexico have secondary NOB mail addresses. Those who do are in the minority.

Not only do I not have a 'secondary NOB mail address', I also have no MexConnect email address.

I do use Skype, however, and love it. It's always been free. What's changed?

Several of us who live all or most of the time in Mexico use and really like SKYPE. There is more than one flavor. When calling a person anywhere in world who does not have SKYPE (i.e., your PC to regular phone), there is a tiny charge, usually just a few cents at most. However, if the person you call is also a SKYPE user, there is not a charge to either of you.... We use it to call U.S. and Canadian businesses, banks, etc (even the government where you're often blessed with
rather long wait times).... at a very low cost. We endorse SKYPE and friends and family in the U.S., Scotland, Germany, etc call us regularly using SKYPE..... enjoy. Never heard of this changing although a friend who is a TELMEX manager says that they are quietly investigating how to block it for those using Prodigy Infinitum.

On looking at the site I see there is Skype, which many of you seem to use and is free and SkypeOut which charges, but not much. Bob is referring to SkypeOut.

I also have SkypeIN which provides me with a local number in Los Angeles so my friends and family can call me free from the old country.

The charge for "Skype In" that Rolly mentions is 30 euros a year. You can get a phone number just about anywhere in the world, and your callers only pay their cost to call that location. If you are not 'online' at this moment , the caller is directed to your mailbox.

I've had trouble signing up for a French number though.

" Skype Out " will let you actually ring up any phone in US/CAN for free (until the end of this year).

It seems the "free calls" only apply to those originating in the USA. From here in Mexico, I am still being charged for my calls to USA numbers.

Rolly -sSince skype will not let you have a mexico number for your friends in mexico to call you, what do you use for that? Is it better to use skype or your other service to call within Mexico?

I hardly ever call within Mexico. When I do, I use Skype. It's a lot cheaper than Telmex.
