The often used phrase "si Dios quiere" has much to do with the fatalism of Mexicanos.

"Ni modo" has much more to do with the fatalism of Mexicanos

I presume you are talking about how the Oaxacan coffee is handled in the bean and prepared for imbibing. Because here in lovely SMA you can get a cup of what is advertised as Oaxacan coffee and it is mighty good by almost all standards. It carries a SMA price I might say.

The hand written note, was with the five heads.

"The family does not kill for pay, does not kill women and does not kill innocents" read a hand written sign left beside the heads. "The only ones who die deserve to die and all the people know that this is divine justice."

nfabq's, reply

"Now this doesn't change the fact that heads have been cut off, but it sure as hell does put a different face on the story of rampant violence in Michoacan! Clearly this is drug-related-targeted murder"

Evidently this was in retaliation for one or two women being murdered, (one was pregnant) and was not necessarily "Drug related".

I agree with Bubba (as usual). The local press in this area is also reflecting the deep concern of the citizenry over the impact that lack of security has on all kinds of things that average Mexicans hold dear. But let's recall again a fact posted on this forum in this same context that observed that actual security situation is inversely proportional to the polled results of people's feelings about security - i.e. when people feel strongly that security is deteriorating, it is actually improving. Brian is a scaremonger.

DonDon:

Yes, coffee grown in Oaxaca is very good. It´s just that coffee is not a favored beverage in Oaxaca state and the good coffee is mainly exported to places such as Lake Chapala and San Miguel where people are willing to pay a premium price for it. This reminds me of when I used to live on Mobile Bay just a short distance from the shrimp boat docks. The shrimp boats would come in and unload on refers bound for Chicago. Locals waiting at the docks sometimes got the dregs. That´s life.

Another thing about getting a cup of coffee in oaxaca (outside the city) is the trick of ordering it when you want to drink it with cream and sugar. It's a lot of fun trying to explain what you mean by that and it's usually better to ask for the coffee first... getting the milk only after you've secured control of the coffee in your actual possesion.

I think good coffee beans are easier to acquire than a good roast on those beans. I've been tempted to buy them green and try roasting them in the RV, at least the smell would be great.

Yes, the best beans are exported but even so the roast on those that are kept and on the mediocre beans that are sold is really bad. They are either burnt to a crisp or still raw. I got some excellent, well roasted beans in Uruapan at a coffee store. mmmm I still remember how good they were. In Chiapas I've had good coffee and bought some well roasted beans in San Cristobal but you have to look and they sure aren't anywhere else (well, maybe Tuxtla haven't looked there). Over in our area you can pay top dollar and get good, well roasted beans in Playa and that is what I do when I run out. Today though I have 12lbs of Peets Major Dickson blend that I just bought on sale for $10 a pound. I have figured that we use 1lb every 2 weeks so I'm ready for 6 months in Mexico. My coffee and my visa run out simultaneously when I do it all right.

Guys - the subject heading of "Teacher Hacked to Death" and a discussion of coffee do not seem to belong in the same thread. Someone might think about starting a new thread on coffee - please!!

Nonpareil! (in San Cristobal at Bubba´s new haunts)

My favorite place so far is the coffee musem which is dedicated to the small farmers of the Soconusco coffee growing region of that state (organic coffees Starbucks likes to tout as Fincas de Chiapas). These folks are sympathetic to the EZLN and somewhat radicalized but I still hope to entice my Republican friend Jonna into going there with me when she´s in town if I promise to eschew politics. There are a few other places in the old colonial city with very good coffee but Chiapas, like Oaxaca is not a place that exhalts coffee so one has to be in the right part of town for the best coffee.

I´m thinking that if I can get Jonna to drink EZLN coffee and Chavez Cola from Venezuela with Caribbean Club Seven year Old Añejo Rum from Cuba, I´ll have a convert or, if that is not to be, at least we can solve the world´s problems on a park bench in Los Cerrilos over Cuba Libres.

Bournemouth:

You may not believe this but I also had noted the irony of the teacher hacked to death thread morphing into discussions of where to find the best quality coffee. Unlike you, I do not find this incongruous at all. Just remember Monty Python´s Life of Brian and Always Look on the Bright Side of Life.

What better place to discuss the murder by hacking (actually ice picking) of someone who is, in fact, more a nebulous concept than a human being, for frivolous participants on this board such as Bubba.

The problem has to do with a misinterpetation of the term 'thread'.

Many folks like bournmouth think that it refers to a non-syncronous electronic conversation dedicated to one topic.

But in fact the original term "thread" is taken from a phonomenon occurring around the planet Pern. Threads are dangerous objects in space that remain dormant until disturbed by heat and friction which burn off thier protective shell and rain down filimants in clumps and sheets. Threads start as thin silver strands but grow thick and menacing as they feed turning themselves into 'heavy hausers' or 'wriggling sausages' which can grow in size to about 3 meters at which point they segment and start on a new page.

Contact with threads cause threadsores. A thread is capable of morphing itself into a cow. A thread dies from the inside out releasing a terrible stench. Fresh water thrown on a dying thread can kill it instantly as can insisting that it stick to the original topic.

this makes me wonder if there's a positive relationship between coffee know how and leftwing ideology.

Chiapas would qualify as a definite blue state but I would classify Oaxaca as a red state in spite of the teachers strike.

I'm going to cuba over New Years and I'll report back on the coffee there (and the rum!).
