Ghastly event in Uruapan

Events once thought of as only occurring at the border and high profile locations in Mexico are now happening in previously unlikely locales. For those who haven't read about it, here is a link to the story: http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/front/4168805.html

Two things are of particular interest here. First, if this deed was actually performed by a drug cartel, then they have strangely softened up on their brutality. The message that they do not harm women, children and innocents sounds like something out of the Italian Mafia code of conduct. Anyone with a sense of history, however, remembers the wholesale slaughter of close to twenty family members near Ensenada a few years ago to "teach a lesson". Since then, family members have been fair game.

Secondly, I think that the expatriate community needs to be concerned about the statement that the narco-families have been buying properties in the more tranquil cities in the Republic. It doesn't take much imagination to know which towns they are talking about.

Actually, Brian, Michoacan is a very violent state. The head rolling event at the dance club in Uruapan does not necessarily mean that the area is becoming more violent. Today´s HERALD reports that there have been 345 people killed this year in Michoacan in drug related incidents out of 1,400 killed nationwide. That´s the most of any state in the nation. Decapitations have become a calling card in Michoacan and Guerrero which some speculate indicates the participation of the Kaibiles or ex-special forces military personnel from Guatemala. Sometimes it seems we labor under the misconception that these violent incidents are localized in certain notorious places. Not so.
