Hurricane John Update

This dreaded hurricane has miraculously spared the resort hotels of Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo where most of the tourists are. Many poor workers who live in make-shift homes had been evacuated (some forced) to safety earlier. They quite likely lost everything and will need assistance.

It appears that the capital city of La Paz (northeast of the resort areas) has taken the worst of the storm. We are still waiting on news to see how much damage was caused in that area. This is a fairly recent (3 page) news link from this morning.

We are receiving plenty of rain in Mazatlan, and the usual flooding in lower areas which we get with all storms. A car ended up in the canal, submerged in water, near Gigante on Avenida La Marina. Reports say that the canal, which divides a 4 lane street, was flooded over and blended with the roadway.

Thanks for the update Marlene. We got gully washing rain with thunder and lightning here near Palm Springs in the Calif desert today. I'm guessing it is being pushed in by John. Of course, it could be because my friend's nephew is having a new pool warming party up in Temecula. It's not my fault, I didn't wash the jeep as I intended.

La Paz suffered relatively light damage, mainly from wind, and power was off only for a few hours in most of the city. (I have a house there and am in touch with friends.) Hardest were south along the East Cape between LP and San Jose del Cabo, and Mulege, farther north. If you are interested in real-life accounts from residents, including local and foreign relief efforts, visit http://forums.bajanomad.com/today.php ... you need not register or log in to read. You'll find a 28-page thread about Hurricane John, area-specific info, and quite a few photos. The news feeds have been WAY behind on this one.

Error In the process of moving the site to another machine for more reliable uptime. The forums should again be available later this morning. Please check back. Update 1 (6:55 AM PT): There has been a significant issue with the new equipment that has caused a lengthier delay. Please check back. Thank you for your understanding.

That's all I get today on Bajanomad.

Yes, you're right, sorry. After posting, I encountered the same on BajaNomad. The forum has been inundated with Hurricane John updates, photos, inquiries about individuals, etc., and Doug has been doing his best to keep up. If you're truly interested, please keep trying.

Ironically, today is the first time in a week that I've been able to access MexConnect (some mysterious internet gremlin that applied only to me, apparently.)
