A recent trip / Viaje reciente

Can't Post |

Recently I traveled Mexico´s Southeast, especially Chiapas, for several days. I drove down to the Usumacinta. On the other side of the great river, Guatemala. Four thousand kilometers round trip and many things to see.

The picture shows the Sumidero Canyon as seen from La Atalaya, a viewpoint accessed by a narrow and winding little road. But the sight is well worth the trip.

I'd like to use this thread as a translation practice. I may post in English or Spanish and then we do the translation job.

Comments welcome in both languages.

Saludos turísticos,

Quevedo

A question. Does anyone know why this canyon is called "Sumidero"?

We saw several crocodiles as this one as we moved along the river. A big, scary beast.

I admit I ran my post through google translator to see if it came out more or less as I meant it. That brought up a question for me. While one would think that cañon means canyon, google says it is barranca and I remembered that the canyon outside of Guadalajara is called a barranca as well.

Not so long, the telephoto. That particular sink hole came to be pretty close to our launch.

Hello,

Barranca is a feminine form of barranco.

barranco.
(De or. (inc., quizá prerromano).[origin perhaps pre-roman]
1. m. Despeñadero[cliff], precipicio[precipice].

Un cañonazo--a salvo of 21 guns or a gun salute.

Sumidero: Duct or canal draining water, as Sr. Jerezano explained, or sink hole, as defined by friend Doogie. The canyon is called Sumidero because the river seemed to be swallowed down when entering the gorge. In the early eighties a dam was erected downriver: the waters raised inside the canyon, the river became navigable and the cañón a sumidero no more.

Yes, there is a basura problem in El Sumidero during the rain season. Fortunately for me, when I was there that was not to be seen. Federal and local governments are displaying important cleaning efforts with the help of the Mexican Army. Thing is, the Grijalva, the river inside the canyon, has many tributaries. Cities and towns along the route irresponsibly pollute the waters. No cleaning effort will produce permanent positive effects if people keep dumping garbage in the waterways. Education, education!

Saludos cordiales,

Quevedo

I very much appreciate the translation practice aspect that Quevado has introduced. If others would also include translation, it would be very helpful for those wanting to get the benefit of the Spanish/English aspect he introduced.
