Infinitum doubled it's download speeds

Can't Post | Private Reply
Has Prodigy doubled their Infinitum (broadband) speeds. When I left 4 weeks ago for a six week visit to NoB the schedule of infinitum connections looked like this

512 Kb/sec $349 + IVA
1 megabyte $599 + IVA
1.3 meg I can't remember
2 megabyte $4,599+IVA
and my speed tests suggested that the 512 was giving about 420 down and the 1 meg about 840 down.

When I checked the same chart today that I got the above info from four weeks ago http://www.telmex.com/...InfinitumInicio.html The speed had doubled to
1 megabyte $349 + IVA
2 megabyte $599 + IVA
4 megabyte $4,599+IVA

Has this already happened? When I get back, will I my 512 connection really be twice as fast?

To give you an idea about Canadian and US pricing;
In BC, Shaw Cable offers 5 Meg for $38.95 Canadian + tax
In WA, ComCast offers 6 Meg for $45.95 US + tax

Thats about 1/10 the cost of Carlos Slim's 4 Meg charge

Darn it Pete - we thought it was because we had a new phone line run into the house yesterday. I've just tested with Cox Las Vegas, which I use all the time so there is some constancy, and it came in at 876 download and 84.9 upload - a great improvement over what we had been getting.

So it's true that they doubled the download speed. I wonder what they did with the upload speed. That 84 seems a little faster than before, but not much.

My speeds have doubled to 1678/208. I'm pleased withthe speed I hope they haven't doubled my bill. I fear that one of the phone calls I received in spanish was a telemarketer from Telemex asking if I wanted to upgrade. My spanish needs mucho improvement. However I must be becomming more Mexican-like for when someone asks me something in spanish I don't understand I say "si".

No rate increase, Bob. The Telmex website is still listing the old price for the new speed.

The sad thing is that apparently Infinitum only doubled its download speed. It doesn't look like they doubled their upload speed. If it's true that they did not increase their upload speed, then my 512 over 128 connection that usually tested out at 420 by 70 or so would go up to 840 by 70 or so. That's a lot better for downloading, but doesn't help when using one's VoIP, you know Vonage, Packet 8 or IconnectHere.

So with the high and now higher download speed I had and will have no problem hearing what the folks say, but with the still slow upload speed, the person I call will still sometimes not be able to hear me. I guess I could pay more and double the upload speed, but here on the shores of Lake Chapala, I find it cheaper to use www.lagunanet.com whose slowest broadband connection has twice to three times the upload speed of my Prodigy connection.

Pete, speaking of Infinitum, have you or anybody else been having trouble with it lately? It seems to us that the Infinitum system has been going down more often. It does not stay down too long but many evenings it has been going down for short periods of time.

Jerry, I'm up North for a couple more weeks. And I do not know. Also Infinitum is not my primary ISP so I do not check too often to see whether or not it works.
