Satellite TV & Pay Per View

Can't Post | Private Reply
I've been browsing through the forums and still have some questions--we will be moving in a couple of months--We'd like to keep our Dish TV service going in CA and bring the box with us-- How is the signal strength in the PV marina area?--also I'm told that we can then order PPV via our computer--does anyone have any insight/suggestions or alternatives??

Your system will work well with the DISH 500 program package, Of course instead of one small satellite dish, you will need two satellite dishes. I'm in Ajijic here one needs a 1.4 and 2 meter dish for the satellites at 110 and 119 W. We have bad luck here with the programs from 129 W that are also included in the Dish 1000 package. I have heard that sometimes or somehow with the correct VoIP system and virtual #, you can order pay-per-view

Thanks for answering so quick--we signed up with Vonage today so maybe that will work--Any suggestions for anything else we need to bring with us? Can we buy the dishes there? Any one in particular recommended in the PV marina area to set things up?----and while we're at it high speed internet?? As you can see we're excited about moving and want to figure it all out before we get there--Lucille & Dominic

I'm the wrong person to ask about PV, a place I only visit. But yes you can get the satellite dishes and LNBs down there. Sadly I do not know who to recommend. Make sure to bring your receiver. I know that the telephone company offers prodigy Infinitum (kind of sort of high speed internet by US standards). I do not know what else might be available down there. Sorry about that.

A couple of "tweaks" to Pete's answer. Dish 500 and Dish 1000 refer not to programming packages, but to the actual size and shape of the antennas used to receive the programming. The Dish 500 is used to receive sats. 110 and 119 with 1 antenna. The dish 1000 is used to receive the sats. 110, 119, and 129 with 1 antenna. These dishes are useless in Mexico. Pete's info. regarding the needed dishes is accurate. The satellite at 129 carries the newly added VOOM HD channels. Unfortunately, that satellite is seriously flawed, and the signal is very difficult to lock because of a power cycling issue. Best to try and get these channels from 61.5 which completely mirrors those channels.
As to your PPV question, you can order a PPV 3 different ways. 1. From your receiver 2. Call and order 3. From your online account with Dish. If your receiver is older, it doesn't need to be hooked up to a phone line to order. I believe the new receivers need to establish a dial tone to order. (It calls Dish to report the order and bill your account--the older receivers called in monthly or so to report your order). VoIP works for this. My receiver is hooked up via VoIP and seems content. You can also call Dish via VoIP and order. VoIP can be in Bombay or Ajijic and Dish doesn't know. All the calls come from their server in the U.S. and only identify you and your U.S. number. There is a service charge--($3-$5)to order via phone, however. You have to set up your Dish account online to order there. I don't know if there is a service fee to do so.
Like Pete said, bring your receiver(s) with you.

Tim
ps-- your VoIP # MUST be from the area that serves the address that is registered with Dish. Otherwise, if you call and the # doesn't match that which is registered with your account, they likely will shut you down.

I think Pete is saying that you need TWO or THREE dishes to get all of the programming!! Think Starchoice. Peter J. can elaborate since he has the service.

Yes although it is theororetically possible with say a 2.4 meter elliptical dish and several LNBs, to receive signals from the Echo Star 7, 8, & 10 satellites, typically down here, the dealers install two satellite dishes, one at 1.4 meters and the other at 2 meters, one pointing at 110 degrees W and other at 119 W. With Star Choice, one needs only one much smaller dish, an elliptical dish which is 36.5 by 26.5 inches and picks up signals from satellites located at 107.3 W and 111.1 West
