Best food markets in SMA

Can't Post | Private Reply
I just posted a question in the Bajio section, but I wanted to ask here too. I am doing a catering in San Miguel this weekend and I am looking for the best place to buy vegetables and meat in that city.

Is there a good variety available, or should I bring it from DF? For instance, I will need organic tomatoes for caprese salad, pork tenderloin and oyster mushrooms. I can haul those things with me, but would rather buy my ingredients fresh on the day of cooking. I have a feeling that there must be a great tiangis market there. I will be shopping Saturday and Sunday.

Thanks!

I think you will be able to find most things in SMA. There are two large markets one in centro next to the Civic Plaza and one a few blocks west at San Juan de Dios. However there is a tienda on Mesones between Relox and Juarez just a couple of doors east of Bonanza, (a grocery store with almost everything imaginable by the way except fresh fruit and veg), that has a reputation for being one of the best in town. Just a door or two east of that is also a butcher shop that has an equally good rep. If you insist on organic you will have to go down to El Tomate on Codo where, incidentally, there is a young street vendor just outside of the corner grocery store selling a good variety of fresh fruit and veg of very good quality. Barbeque Bob's a km further south of El Tomate on Salida de Celaya also claim some organic produce. If you can't find what you need in one of those there is always Gigante where the weekend will usually yield whatever you are looking for and in my opinion, as good quality-wise as anywhere even tho the store itself leaves a good deal to be desired (a recent fire there has not hleped).

I am not sure about the oyster mushrooms but the other things are available. You may have to go to several places but it is do able. Green Giant raises mushrooms on the road to Rodriguez but only have seen the ordinary white mushrooms..They are open Saturday morning for retail. Also the amount of pork tenderloin and tomatoes nay make a difference. Many caterers go to Queretaro to Sam's and Cosco. SMA is a small town with a few "big City" people.

Thanks for your responses. I ended up bringing all the ingredients in a cooler from Mexico, so it ended up being fine. I figured I could save time that way, seeing as I don't know SMA at all and couldn't go exploring as I would have like to do. Perhaps on another trip...
