Toyota truck in Mexico-HELP!

I am going to look at a 1995 model Toyota in 3 days.
If I buy this truck I will be taking it to Oaxaca and back (CA)
and using it in Mexico. I will have basic spare parts and will do routine maintenance on it..am I crazy, not holding out for a NISSAN instead? I understand that NISSANS are common and Toyotas are not...

I followed your advice, AND I double checked my Mexico library, and recalled the faces of my friends in Mexico when i asked if Toyotas were common...I'm going to stick with Nissan and Honda.

Take the Toyota! There are many folks that have Toyotas in MX. You can get parts and easy as anybody else. I have a Ford, which is widely used in MX, and if parts are needed many times they have to be ordered. All depends of which part breaks! All cars are the same (Except High Priced European Cars or Yugos) you should be fine with your choice and personally, I don't like Toyotas!!!!

Actually I saw many more Toyota's in Mexico (Jalisco) a few weeks ago while there than I have ever seen before. I think I read somewhere that they are or will be made there! I drove down a '78 in '95 and believe it or not (I gave it away in 2000) I still see the rusted hulk around the village, though the bed has fallen off of it!! Just ahve a mechanic replace everything that needs it. Replace belts, plugs, air filter, fuel filter (take extra one-change everu 6 months) and take old one's with ya. Make sure the radiator/thermostat is tiptop, brakes are in great shape,. I would even put a new set of tires on it and take the best two with ya!
Been there done that 3 times!!

Toyotas are not currently being sold in Mexico and as such parts, much less an actual Toyota mechanic are not available in Mexico. Toyota is suppose to be building a factory in Mexico so they most likely will eventually be sold there. Toyotas in general are few and far between down there. There are exceptions such as Baja and near the Belize and Guatemala borders. Last summer I saw numerous Toy 4x4's in Jalisco. Mostly the old solid axle ones, many of which were in immaculate condition. I would have loved to have bought some and brought them back to the US. Toyotas will on average outlast any other vehicle you can buy and will on average require less maintenance. However, if you are moving to Mexico get a Nissan. There are dealers all over as well as parts and as such, most any local mechanic could repair one.

Toyota has just entered Mexico over the last few months. I know at least three dealerships in DF - on Av. Universidad and a couple on or near Periferico in the South. They are about to build a parts factory in Tijuana. They may, however, be fairly hard to find in the hinterland.

It might be a good idea to get a service manual, (not owners manual) that has the parts numbers in case a Mexican dealer needs to order. I have travelled extensively with Nissan vehicles in Central AMerica and find that the same vehicle name is totally different than its US counterpart, ie a Nissan Pathfinder sold in Nicaragua is vaastly different than the one made here. I had to have brake pads custom made by the Nissan dealer in order to replace them. They suggestde it would be much easier to have US parts numbers to cross reference or order replacements. We took a 1980 Toyota pickup down for my father-in-law and he has always found parts for it or they have adapted parts for it from some other vehicle. On the other hand, my brother-in-law took a 1984 Nissan from the US to Mexico and so far we have had to get a part that cost around $350 and still needs another part from here that will be about $400 more dollars. They can't find the parts in Mexico. For us the Toyota came out a lot better. It could be because it is older, so it doesn't have a lot of computer things to it. My other brother-in-law is planning on taking another older Toyota when he goes again. By the way, we took the Toyota in 1990 and it is still going strong.

I forgot to tell you, we always found the parts in Celaya, Gto. I don't know why, but there are some parts stores that carry or order the parts from there.
