Driver's license?

Can't Post | Private Reply
I have searched the past posts for an answer to this question and have concluded that the answer will vary from state to state in Mexico. So I will humbly put it to the board and hope that someone from Nayarit will read and answer. My husband and I are buying a house In Bucerias, Nayarit. We are also planning to purchase a Mexican-plated car, since we did not bring a car with us from the US. Does anyone know if we will be required to have a Mexican driver's license? Or will our valid US licenses suffice? As always, thanks in advance for your help - Karen

You are correct that the rules on licensing vary by state, but you are always wise to have a Mexican license even when your foreign license is OK for the simple reason that not all cops know the law. Get a Mexican license, and one of these days it will make your life simpler.

Besides if you are back NoB and get stopped, it really confuses them. The result is no ticket. I got stopped last month because I had not buckled my seat belt until I was actually on the road. Although I still have a CA license, all I had to do was tell him my address - xxx xxxx #139, Villa Nova, Ajijic, Jalisco. Although he was obviously planning on giving me a ticket, he gave up immediately.

For some reason I forgot to give him my Texas address. I think he would have understood that.

You do not need a Mexican drivers license to buy a Mexican plated car. Your valid U.S. or Canadian license will suffice.

The drivers license office for our area is in Mezcales, Nayarit . (We also live in Bucerias.) We don't have Mexican DL's, but I could descrive to you where to go get the license. Take your passport and FM3 when you go, I think it cost our friend about 450 pesos for hers. No test. She said they told her, "you are from Europe, so I'm sure you can drive well." No mordida either, BTW

Thanks to all of you for your responses. I agree with Rolly about the wisdom of having a Mexican drivers license, but it is good to know that we don't have to get one before we can buy a car - which is scheduled for this week. My husband has a Mexican amigo who will go car shopping with him - starting with the pages of Mano a Mano. Hopefully, we will soon have some wheels. After we get settled in Bucerias, we'll pursue the drivers licences. Karen
