Driving Over the Devil's Backbone

One of the most breathtaking drives I've ever made. And this writer was pretty impressed, too.

The Test Drive
A trip can challenge any relationship. It's even harder when you're driving through Mexico with your new girlfriend.

Driving to Durango, Mexico, is a marvelous, occasionally treacherous journey from the coastal resort of Mazatlan, and the trek over the Sierra Madre Occidental mountains to this historic high-desert mining city makes a fascinating and spiritually balancing side trip from touristy beaches, restaurants and high-rise hotels.

Here is a 3 minute video that gives a small taste of the trip. The odd music was from the driver's CD player. (It is not my video.)

Cute video but where were all the trucks, buses and autos that we encountered on that trip? We stopped at the lookout point where the video ends, along with a lot of other people, and suddenly we could hear a large truck grinding down the hill - everyone scattered, rushing to their vehicles, to get on the road before the truck came down. A spectacular drive indeed.

And to think this spectacular journey takes just 40 minutes by airplane (at an outrageous price!)
