Are you a genius or what, Rolly? You certainly have better eyes for the details than I do. More, patience, too, no doubt.

Which is why I don't think, Pete, I'm going to test my upload and download speeds right now. Went to the site and see lots and lots of interesting stuff there, but when I get into this kind of thing, it takes me days to come up for air, and I got to get my bags packed!!! So will wait until I get to Mexico.

See you at the SF Bay Area Reunion! Whenever/wherever that is! Sorry, no abalone. Want some grits?

I like this one better http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

It gives the same results as Pitstop, but is a lot easier to use.

You must have terribly slow connection speed to have such terrible experience that "My experience over the years, all in Mexico, has been that they all suck over dial-up when using the computer to call a regular phone in the US, but some days are better than other."

Also, there is no $25.00 start up charge with IConnectHere. You can start for as little as $4.95 for 400 minutes (North America) and the plan for 1000 north american minutes is only $10.95.

One change I did have to make: After using IConnectHere for 3 years on Windows 95, I got a new laptop (hurray!) and couldn't get a good connection. After I installed and started using their new beta version 6, things improved greatly. I still use IConnectHere exclusively, although I'm sure there are other good ways to call the U.S. I doubt if many can beat the price of 1.1 cents per minutes, though.

I tried both of those websites, Pitstop and Speakeasy and was pretty excited about it, until I got to my laptop -- I'm trying to manage two computers here at once -- and could not EVER get the Speakeasy test to run on the laptop. At first I thought it was a failed download of the Flashplayer, then I thought it was the Pop-up Controls, then maybe the Internet Security controls. (I may never be virus-free again!) And now I simply don't know.

Both programs work fine on my PC, which clocks btw a 409kbps upload and 44 download on Pitstop, then practically the opposite on Speakeasy! I know! ???

The Pitstop clocks a download of 332 and an upload rate of 26. But why oh why won't that test drive on Speakeasy fully load? Sometimes it says "1 item remaining" and sometimes nothing. The server-stations load, but not the info to the right which starts the program. Any clues for me, Rolly?

Not a clue, amigo.

That business of the page refusing to load completely plagues me on Hotmail.com, and once in a while in other places. Wish I knew what to do about it beside swear and go to the fridge.

I have noticed that on some sites and some servers (usually very busy servers with a low bandwidth) that a complete page can take as much as 4 to 5 minutes, and sometimes more to completely download. Don't really know why except as stated above for a slower than usual server or internet congestion that the site is accessing the server through, and as you know it may have to go through multiple servers to access a site. For example, I've traced a route acessing my own server (I have 2) and one minute the path may be via W. Verginia, Great Brittain,Africa, S America, Mexico, Denver and then my server in Texas. A very roundabout path to get from here to there, aand usually always a different path each time. Ocassionally one or two of the servers in the path will be overloaded, slow, or for some other reason will delay access. Sometimes clicking the Red X (stop) in the browser toolbar and then re-clicking on the site you want will find a different, faster path. Fortunately this doesn't happen too often, but if a particular server you're trying to get a page from, it may happen multiple times until the server load abates somewhat. The hotmail server is one BUSY server and can be one of the worst to access. This is probably clear as mud..
Getting older and still not down here.

There is a fascinating book on the origins of the internet that details the how and why of the routing and everything else that makes the internet go. Where Wizards Stay Up Late by Hafner and Lyon. It's a great read for anyone interested in how the internet came to be.
