Water softener

We are in the process of getting a quote for whole house water purification and a water softener - the minerals in the water here do a number on showers, dishes, flatware etc. In the back of my mind I had the idea that there are softeners that do not use salt but the people giving me the quote only care to use salt based softeners.

I've done a quick Google but most of the results pertain to people selling systems. I'm looking for some personal experience. From your experience, is a salt based softener the only thing out there that works?

I'd be grateful for any input.
