Never done it but I have look into it for I will eventually.
From SFO south to LA & left & across AZ, TX, NM---can't recall the highway #'s!
Day 1: Texas border (McAlly) to Cd. Victoria.
Day 2: Cd. Victoria to Poza Rica by way of Tampico.
Day 3: See El Tajín and stop at a beachside hotel near Nautla.
Day 4: See Cempoala and stop at Veracruz.
Day 5: Stop at Villahermosa.
Day 6: On the way out of town, take the Frontera exit to go by way of Cd. del Carmen. Stop at Campeche.
Day 7: Reach Mérida early in the day.

The highways are interstate 10, which takes you all the way across Texas from California, then one of several major freeways from the San Antonio area that goes to McAllen, then onward through Mexico.
Good Luck on your trip, only drive the day...relax at night in a secure hotel.

Thanks Joe! what is like driving from CA across TX?
Is it scenic, deserted in certain parts?
Is it best to drive in the Fall and or is Summer allright as long as your vehicle has AC?
