Microsoft Streets and Maps SW

Can't Post |
Hope this question makes sense. My husband and I are coming to Mexico this month for two months looking for our dream retirement location. We were (may still) buy a GPS but found that MS had this neat SW pkg called Streets and Maps GPS which was under $200. So, since we both would enjoy the GPS system on a larger laptop screen this seemed like a win-win situation. However, we are not certain if there is a map of Mexico of the MS sys? The system comes with US and Cananda and when you go to their site there is no mention about Mexico being avaiable. I sent them an email, but no answer yet.

Hence my email to you folks - the gurus of the web. Does anyone perhaps have this system or know if what we are propsoing is possible?

Maybe 5 years ago, I saw a GPS system which had maps of Mexico in it. We drove along lakeside and our location was shown on a display map. I have no idea which system it was. The person who had this system returned to the states 2 years ago and I have no idea how to reach him.

I tried using MS streets & maps in March. As near as I can remember, the main routes were shown, but not necessarily all, and no details. Haven't been able to find any Mexico map that works with streets & maps.
Did seem to work somewhat if you knew the gps coordinates and entered them, but again incomplete information. We did find Petes house that way but he didn't hear our knock on the gate.
There is one gps that has Mexico mapped but unfortunatly I can't remember which it is. If I run across it, I'll post it.

Many thanks for all the replies -- after more research we found Microsoft was just too proprietary (big surpise there) and decided to go with Garmin. We hope to be on the road before Friday and are very excited to get our adventure started.

The Garmin basemap has about the same amount of detail in Mexico as does Streets and Trips. Quite a lot actually. However, I would suggest you spend a little more and buy a map for your Garmin (I recently switched from Quest to Nuvi) here:

Wishful thinking. It would be nice though if it showed the big 'uns.
