Buen Provecho

I thought I new the meaning of this expression, but now not sure as I have heard it in different contexts. Previously, I thought it had to do with meals, ie., "enjoy you meal", but now I have heard it used in like "have a good day"
What are the correct usages of "buen provecho?"
Thanks
David

One day I was eating a croissant, standing up on my small balcony in France. And the neighbor saw me and said "Bon Appetite." I thought it meant to enjoy what you are eating - but now with your comments on buen provecho, I think it goes much deeper. It sounds like a wish for good health through eating good food. I never thought about it that way. This is relevant for me because I am a chef and cook for people. My training included nutrition and how to present a complete nutritional meal. Thanks a lot.
