An Observation... True or False?

Can't Post | Private Reply
Before moving to Mexico persons spend their days in front of their computer screens interacting on Message boards like MexicoConnect and Chapala.com. They ask questions, make jokes, practice Spanish with people unseen who already live in Mexico. They dream of life in Mexico. They look at Real Estate listings and imagine how life will be when they move to Mexico, Lakeside or wherever into their dream home with a maid and gardener....

After moving to Mexico persons spend their days in front of their computer screens interacting on Message boards like MexicoConnect and Chapala.com. They answer questions, make jokes, get ornery when dreamers ask the same questions over and over, give up on their Spanish lessons because most people speak English Lakeside. The maid and gardener show up. They see them working around the hacienda as they type away on their keyboards interacting all day long with unseen people NOB. They look at Real Estate listings and imagine how life will be in their next and better house Lakeside or wherever they will move...

Will someone please install a few webcams here and their around Ajijic or Chapala, and Morelia. I won't have to leave my Computer Screen. I'll visit my local Mexican restaurant when I have a hangering for Mexican grub... Probably save myself a boatload of money, aggravation, red tape, worry about health care, where do I exchange dollars for pesos, can I bring my car, getting into IMSS, nationalizing my car... Ahh... Life is Good...

Okay... Don't get your livers in a quiver it is a bit "tongue in cheek" "kinda" "sorta"... But is it true? Seems a lot of you all down there spend a lot of time in front of your computer screens, huh?

Love ya,
Bill Newell

Bring a laptop so you can run around town looking for hotspots where you can continue your cyber life at the plaza or McD's or where ever.

I'm one who is really guilty of this. My wife thinks I spend way too much time "bloviating with people I don't even know." I feel, though, that at least some of you are good friends that I just happen never to have met yet.

I also garden for a couple of hours a day, read a book every day or two, read LA Times (Liberal), San Diego Union Trib (Conservative) and parts of other papers for sports and opinion, travel around Mexico regularly, play tennis three days a week if I have partners, sightsee in Guad, Manzanillo, every town within 100 miles, walk the dogs in the village for an hour a day, get a beer at Nuevo Posada - if lucky run into someone to chat with for an hour. My favorite daily activity is spending the last hour or two before dark sitting on the terraza watching the sun go down behind the mountains, sipping my one (big) tequila and thinking and or reading. It is really peaceful.

In the year we have been here, I have done a lot of home repair projects, worked with our consultant in a re-model of our house, bought a new house, sold our CA house, and am working with the remodeling of that house as well as doing a major landscaping project. Lots of Spanish involved in all of the above except selling the CA house.

I have to admit I don't have a bunch of Mexican friends, but do speak Spanish with at least five people each day, study Spanish from books and computer. I also sit around wishing I were here long enough at one time to get a tutor and get some intensive conversational Spanish or take a good Spanish class.

We go out to lunch and dinner about four days a week, see every house that has an open house from Chula Vista to Jocotepec. Don't go to LCS, don't play bridge, don't golf. Don't do lots of other things I would like, but don't have time for.

Go to La Bodega for entertainment occasionally, go to plays (quality sometimes spotty), concerts, and various charity events. Go to Real de Chapala for Sunday Brunch occasionally (Usually among few gringos in attendance), and we help out with the old people at Casa de Ancianos.

I'm glad this came up. Friends NoB, ask how I pass my time. I sometimes don't have an answer at the tip of my tongue. Now I will.

dlyman6500,

I knew you all had to do more than sit at your computers all day. Ha ha ... Sounds wonderful!

I'm curious when you considered moving to Mexico were your friends and family shocked? Or
had you been coming to Mexico over many years as a vacation spot? I wonder how many who
moved there, shocked friends and family. Since you mention that your friends ask you what you
do with your time in Mexico, I'm just curious if people back home have a hard time understanding
your move?

We got a lot of negative flack. My wife's children are waiting expectantly for her little finger to arrive in the mail from narcotraficantes. They don't understand that narcotraficantes don't usually attack 70 year old gringo grannies who have never participated in any form of illegal substance abuse.

We would love to have them visit and see how safe it is here. Unfortunately, her son-in-law is a trucker and listens to San Diego right wing radio all day, which is less than positive about Mexico and the Mexican people. They have made it very clear that they will never come here. This used to really hurt my wife, to the point of almost driving her back to SoCal. Finally, though, she has just decided "screw them."

My daughter really irks me. When she was 23, she packed her bags, got on a plane and flew to Chile, where she spent a year. She had no idea where she was going when she left and spoke little Spanish. I wasn't thrilled, but I did support her. I really wanted her to go to Costa Rica which I know somewhat. She came back a year later and became a fully certified bilingual teacher, which really ticked off a lot of SoCal locals who couldn't pass the tests. Now, she says she wouldn't consider letting her daughters come to visit us.

She, her husband, and the children did come here last Fall, though, and enjoyed themselves, though this is not a community that is geared for small children. She is still very sceptical about our move. Now that we are having some health problems, she is really screaming. She thinks Mexican health care is not good enough for her sweet daddy.

One of my best friends, between his trips to sub saharan Africa (road trip from Kenya to South Africa), to Southeast Asia, Viet Nam, Laos, Thailand, etc. and just about everywhere else, won't come because his wife now really hates Mexico. They were in the Cancun hurricane last year and it was not pleasant then or in the aftermath.

My tennis friends, a lot of whom are a little racist - or a lot racist, require me to show my green card before they will let me play tennis with them when I go NoB. I'm always greeted by "we don't allow no Mescins here, Pedro,"

All in all, it is heartening the way my friends and acquaintances have rallied in support of our move.

dlyman6500,

From everything I have read, your daughter's health NOB is in more jeopardy from the Healthcare Establishment than yours is in Mexico. Too bad there is so much prejudice in the world. I hate what is going on here in the US recently over this immigration issue. I hope it gets resolved in a positive way for the Mexican workers. (But I don't want to get into a political discussion here.)

Back to health issues, I just saw a news piece last night about people in the US getting sick from "bagged lettuce salad." And, it didn't come from Mexico! Everyone always talks about "washing fruits and vegetables" and soaking in disinfectant when you live there. I wonder really how much simple prejudice is behind that practice or is it truly a health issue and people would/do get sick more often if not following that practice. Of course, we do a cursory wash of fruits and vegetables here in the States as well but nothing like "soaking" although maybe we should after hearing that report last night. But really I wonder if the reason for the iodine disinfectant is more because the water is not potable than there is much difference in the relative contamination of the fruits and veggies themselves.

How has your experience been with this issue?

Regards
Bill Newell

We have had several major discussions about the washing of produce in recent times on this and other fori. The general consensus is that using disinfectant drops is a good thing. Several, including a woman who has spent years in the food industry and has extensive knowledge of NoB produce packing, have recommended just washing things thoroughly in potable water. Since we find that the drops (my wife did this and we no longer do it, so I don't know the name - iodine??) seem to drastically shorten the shelf life of the produce, we have opted to go with that recommendation.

We simply wash our produce thoroughly. Our fraccionmiento (home owners assn??) has its own well with potable water. We also have a water purification system in our home. We are doubly covered. We drink the water from the tap and wash our produce in the water. I have to admit that in the past two weeks we both have had disentary problems for the first time in over a year. We think it was from restaurant food. We had not eaten our own produce in the period that it developed.

I told my daughter that when we came here, we made a conscious decision, based on a lot of research, that the medical coverage that we would get here was at least as good as that NoB. She was not impressed and pointed out that they send babies from Mexico to the US for exotic illnesses, etc. This from a woman who hitch hiked all over the Chilean and Argentinean Andes while her old dad fretted.

We still keep our Medicare Part B in case of something that requires massive cost, but at present just bite the bullet and pay for anything that comes up. My eye surgery tomorrow will cost about $1,000 US. Office visits to the opthamalogist are $30. My wife's and my visit to the highly respected and competent doctor for our stomach problems cost $15 each. My wife has had two house calls from doctors - $60 each (and baby sitting by me for one doctor's cute kid who came with him).

Well thanks, this post is more pleasant, and more real to me than a bunch on another board. It seems that there as many unhappy people living in the lake area as there are NOB, water, traffic, rude Mexicans, rude snowbirds, RUDE, RUDE AND SOME MORE. As for me, I have been a B******, always thinking what can be the worst possible outcome, on and on and some more. Well in 1995 when I was retired from the Army I made my wife, son, and my self a big promise that I would not die a nasty, miserable old man. If I can't be happy then I am not going to do it. I am coming and I will be happy

Hmm, they don't seem to have any problem attacking middle-aged gringo aerospace workers.

The lower level narcos dabble in armed robbery and kidnapping. Since it isn't their prime business, some aren't that good at it. A badly positioned roadblock, a quick threat assesment by my wife, my 8 cylinder car combined with my strong will to protect my family resulted in me being able to type this to you today. There are many details about what happened between running the roadblock and our safe arrival in Tijuana that I cannot disclose.

Isn't it marvelous how our kids feel free to take off for Absurdistan without a by-your-leave and then get outraged when the folks decide to move to nearby Mexico?

My son had a real hissyfit. It was Omigod, the Mexicans kill Gringos with machetes down there and what if you get sick and what if there's a Revolution.....etc. This, coming from an guy who could turn a mom's hair gray when he was a teenager. He came to visit last year, nervous about everything from the airport to the taxi to the ETN bus. A few nights later, one of the firecracker holidays happened, good and loud and right outside. I was sooo tempted to rush to his door and yell "Quick, get your pants on....I think the revolution has started." Kinda wish I had. hmmm.

Maybe our kids are worried about us having too good a time here and spending their inheritance. I'm trying to.

Gringal,

I think you hit the nail on the head, "Afraid we're spending their inheritance". Ha ha ha... Exactly! $240 bucks for burial from SSA. What inheritance?

We're all still "hippies" at heart no matter what our age, don't you think? Our parents never understood us and now our kids don't either. Ha ha ha ha... Where are my bellbottoms and Madras shirt when I need them?

I can't. But my kids can.

In Guadalajara university circles (ITESO - the Jesuit school), it seems that wearing mom and dad's vintage bell bottoms, fringed suede, leather jackets and 3-piece suits is cool. Highly cool.

I never, ever dreamed I'd like my kids so much. Or that they'd enjoy my company as teens and 20s. Much less buy CD sets of the Beach Boys and the Doors. (And turn me on to Argentine rock and Chilean reggae.)

I love Mexico and Mex kids! And livng here! I feel so privileged.

It appears that my relatives and friends think I am sort of half-cracked for having moved here and do not relate to my strong feelings about the needs and desires of the Méxican people (as much as I understand).I have stopped watching FOX news, because of the right wing bias and blatent anti-Méxican blah-blah-blah.
Since the 'troubles'with immigration, no one from up there has written to me.....probably figure I have been buried in sand being feasted on by ants or challanged to a fight in the local cantina ( I've wanted to go in one, but am too chicken).
The nob's better take a long look at a map of the western hemisphere........there is a lot of territory that doesn't speak english or have kind feelings toward the bully up north. They better wake up and smell the tacos.

According to a poll widely discussed yesterday on all the networks most 18-24 yr olds could not find Louisiana, Mississippi, & other states on a map. They probably would have equal difficulty finding the "western hemisphere" as well. Its no wonder many companies are sending work out of the USA.

In that same survey, only 14% thought learning another language was important. A whole bunch (forget the number now) thought that english was the most widely spoken language in the world. It's sad and its pitiful.

I blame the 'feel good' education in US public schools and the fear that flunking someone will scar them emotionally or - worse yet - cut the funds, so they pass everyone with no real knowledge and no concept that if you don't work for something you really can fail.

Also interesting, hardly any of them could find Iraq on a map even on a map of the middle east. I wonder if they know the planet is round?

Or you can do like my son the geek does, he puts the lat and long into google earth and then IMs me with info about the area I'm in. He did this while we were in Guatemala, telling me the height of the mountains around me and that there was a river off to our left. He works at a tech firm in LA and his co-workers often come in his office to see where his mom is now. He tells me I hold the cool parent travel award for the company <g>
