DISH NETWORK

Can't Post | Private Reply
I was talking to a local satellite dealer here in Ajijic, Jaime, at Satellite Source (376-766-3427) and he mentioned to me that the folks at DISH network had launched another satellite and therefore we would be getting better reception down here. Well guess what? I'm getting all, not some of the channels I subscribe to on DISH when pointing at 110 degrees W.

No I am not getting the spot beamed local network signals, but I am getting all instead of most of the CONUS (wide beam) signals sent to me from what were originally satellites Echo Star 6 and 8 but now also include Echo Star 10 all located at 110 W.

Now as far as PBS East, I need to know what the call letters are, the city, and the channel you watched this station on. Then maybe I can figure out how to get it.

I am confused regarding your request for "PBS East" information. You will get your local PBS station if you subscribe to your local channels here in the USA. Obviously, in Mexico, unless the locals you subscribe to are on CONUS, you will NOT get any of your locals. I am lucky because I am in the Chicago DMA and get those locals. They are on CONUS transponders, therefor I will get them in Ajijic. Back to your question. If you qualify for Distant Locals here in the USA, you will also qualify for the national feed of PBS. As far as I know there is no East or West. Just one national feed. So how do you get it?? Well, it is free-- kinda. You do have to subscribe to get it. If you subscibe to distant networks they throw it in for free. In your particular case, if you have sent in the RV exemption paperwork, just call Dish(when back in the USA) and subscribe to the Distant Network Package of your choice and PBS should be included(make sure to ask for it--the Dish CSR's are not the best). http://www.dishnetwork.com/...ing/locals/rv_truck/
There are other ways to subscribe to Distant Locals as well. That is discussion for another thread.

I agree with Tim. I have a New York City local package and that includes PBS -- a network feed, not WNET.

OK, then maybe from the limited amount of time I got to watch PBS before it vanished, I happened to see WNET programs. However, other people in this area (Ajijic) are also reporting that they no longer get PBS and the note on the screen says that DISH has temporarily lost the signal. Are you still getting it Rolly? It's about all I care to watch and if it wasn't for the "other person" in this house watching sports, we might as well cancel!

Yes, I watch PBS every night, including tonight (before I feel asleep in my chair.)

Dish fired up E-10 earlier this month and switched a lot of things around. E-6 is just about empty, and a lot of the spot beam duty of E-8 has been assumed by E-10. There were over 300 transponder changes. E-10 and E-8 are more powerful than E-6. So, I'm not surprised that you are now able to get all CONUS transponder channels.

Rolly subscribes to the "distant network package" and picked the NY channels - which includes the NATIONAL PBS feed. Mr. bournemouth obviously subscribes to the "NY locals package" which includes the LOCAL PBS channel(WNET). Why it is off the air for you I don't know, but will try to find out. If they moved it to a side satellite spotbeam, well, adios WNET. My point was that you either get the local PBS station, or the national feed--of which there is only one.

I just went to http://www.lyngsat.com/...ges/dish119_sid.html and learned that WNET is a spot beam and can not be received in Mexico, nor in much of the US.

8100 20 WABC-TV (ABC - New York) Nagravision 2 Conus beam
8101 20 WCBS-TV (CBS - New York) Nagravision 2 Conus beam
8102 20 WNBC-TV (NBC - New York) Nagravision 2 Conus beam
8103 20 WNYW-TV (FOX - New York) Nagravision 2 Conus beam
8104 20 WPIX-TV (WB - New York) Nagravision 2 Conus beam
8105 20 WWOR-TV (UPN - Secaucus) Nagravision 2 Conus beam
8106 3 WNET-TV (PBS - New York) Nagravision 2 Northeast beam (Not viewable outside the NE and certainly not in Mexico)

Well, Peter cleared up your mystery. Put a picture of the WNET-TV logo on your Day of the Dead altar, because that will be the only time you ever see it again in Mexico!! Dish obviously moved it from a ConUS(Continental US) transponder(think shotgun pattern) to a spotbeam(very focused-think rifle bullet hole vs. the shotgun) when they fired up the new satellite E-10.

Well Pete, thank you I guess. That means that those of us who get the local NY channels are out of luck on PBS. It was there originally - this is very sad. Does any techie person have an idea of how we NY feed folks now get PBS or is the national feed there on a channel that I am unaware of - that's not hard for me I must say!

And Taltman thank you too for the input.

Pete,

that's great news! What about the HD channels? Are you getting them ALL as well? DISH picked up the former Voom channels and now offers 25 HD channels. We're looking at switching to DISH from DirecTV end of this month.

I am having trouble with the VOOM channels one gets at 129 W. Taltman711 posted a while back that the satellite at 129 W was weak, and that until it is replaced that we will have problems with the signals from that bird, this far south. They are supposedly also available at 61.5 west, but I have not tried it so I do not know

Most of the old Voom Channels are mirrored at the 61.5 slot, but not sure about all. Dish(Echostar)has said that the future of HD will be at 129. However the sat. at 129 is having serious issues, and people in the USA are screaming about the signal fading in and out. Not the best way to promote oneself as the "HD leader"!!! Anyway, the best way--at this time--to get as much HD in Mexico as possible from Dish is to try to lock onto 61.5. You should be able to get a stable signal from 129 by this time next year when the replacement is launched for the current sat.

Danke schön, Pete and taltman. Our move SoB is not until next fall, so hopefully the new satellite will solve that problem by then.
