Semana Santa Crowds !

Wow...where did all these people come from? The rest of Mexico must be empty. Hotels are full, beaches are packed and Avenida del Mar is a parking lot. Everyone seems to be enjoying this popular time of year at the beach (except maybe those trying to figure out how to get to and from work in the Golden Zone).

There is a new attraction for the national tourists this year, proving to be very popular. It is the new gambling place that opened in January, complete with Vegas-style slot machines. Where else (yet) can one find something like this in Mexico, alongside the ocean? Many pesos are being left behind in that one spot alone judging from the crowds waiting to get in and the increased security at the door!

Marlene, You do not have all the tourists as the Melaque area has more than doubled in population. People are camping in the median on the street, in the camp grounds crowded together, in the vacant lots, on the beach and in trucks they came in parked along the street. This place is a zoo.

The beach is very crowded and all tables and chairs are occupied in all the palapa restaurants along the beach. Of course many tables and chairs were added for this two week period but there is just not enough. Of course people bring their own to sit at and lots of beach umbrellas are along the beach.

Each night the streets in El Centro are closed off as there are just too many people around to drive through. It really is not that much better during the day but you can get through.

Of course we have the circus, and carnival rides in town too and they are packed each night.

For some reason people are going in the ocean water which is like ice. It must be down around 74º. I can't wait until June when it gets over a respectable 80º so I can go in.
