A new webpage on health care in Mexico

Can't Post | Private Reply
I have added a new page to my website. This one dealing with health care planning issues for ex-pats.

This has been discussed many times on MexConnect and other message boards. I have gathered (i.e. blatantly stolen) information from many posts to put together my little primer. Those of you who recognize your anonymous words, prey forgive my larceny.

I am not altogether happy with it and would appreciate comments and suggestions from you who have had some experience with health care SoB.

Excellent Rolly. I've heard there is an age limit on IMSS. Over 65, no go for an expat. Is this fact or fiction?
Getting older and still not down here.

My question is that I am 100% disabled VA and my wife and son are covered under tricare standard. Is there medical care in the lake region that will allow us to pay for general care and submit the bills to those guys, and what would happen if there was a major medical problem?

My understanding of the VA issue is that with 100% disability they will pick up the bill for pretty much everything no matter where and with whom you are treated outside the continental US - but the only person qualified to confirm that is your VA advisor in the US.

Before you take ANYTHING you should be tested and seen by a doctor for an accurate diagnosis. At the very minimum, have a stool sample tested.

I am over 65, have an FM-3 and signed up for IMSS last year with no difficulty in Zacatecas. It just costs more as you get older, and there is the risk for some seniors of having pre-existing conditions that are on the IMSS list, otherwise...no problem. Joan

Haven't tried the one you mentioned, but why would anyone want to pay $40 US when Imodium works well (usually within the hour) and costs around $6 for 12 pills, over the counter ?

The "Mexican trots" - are they wearing little sombreros when they arrive, or are they the same old worldwide trots wearing "Gotcha" t-shirts?

Esteban: No doubt it's good to see the doc first, but when the problem hits and you're out of town on a bus with 40 people, you need something to stop it before the situation gets gruesome.

Well, it all depends on your purpose; to stop the symptoms or cure the disease. Either way, eventually you have to do what's right and that's get tested.

Prorader... google up "tricare overseas retired" and you will get plenty of information about what tricare benefits you are entitled to as a retiree who resides outside of the CONUS.

In short, if, as a retiree, you are eligible for tricare in the US, you will be eligible for Tricare Standard when overseas. You will have to pay for care out-of-pocket, and then apply for reimbursement.

Esteban,

Are you German or have you studied German? I notice your signature includes this quote
"Gehen Sie nach Mexiko und essen Sie Tortillas und heiße chilesã"

I wish I could speak more German. I am becoming familiar with the language because my
son (an American) is married to a German woman and they live in Germany (in Bayern...
Langendorf, Germany which is a very small village about 1.5 hours south east of Frankfurt.
We have 3 grand children in Germany and visit there (or try to) at least once a year. Every time
I go I pick up a little more but certainly can't carry on any conversation yet. And now I'm afraid
my language learning attention will need to be directed toward Spanish if we continue with our
plan to move to Mexico in three years.

But I was just curious about your quote in the signature and what connection you have to
Germany.

Wie gehts!
