A Different Car Rental Question

Can't Post | Private Reply
I'm picking up a Hertz car in the Tijuana airport (I hope) next Monday. The national (US) rental line assures me that I can drive it in the US if I have insurance. I'm not at all sure that is correct and that I will be able to take the car NoB and am prepared to take a cab to the border and then scrounge around until I can get a rental car somewhere - evidently no agencies in San Ysidro.

Can anyone tell me if I have been given a correct story, that I can take a Mexican Hertz car across the border?

Another problem is that I have US insurance that covers rental cars. Will that suffice when renting a car in Tijuana for US use?

Don't know if this will help you, but I think I have found really good car rental insurance. Check out www.totaltravelinsurance.com fill out the instant quote on the right and then when the various plans come up scroll down to Rental car insurance. The first plan(with Travelex) is not only the cheapest I have ever seen for car rental insurance but covers a lot of other things including $50,000 worth of coverage for the rental car(most other companies only cover $35,000), $500,000. worth of medical coverage and medical evacuation!!! I called and talked to them about this coverage because it seemed to good to be true but they confirmed everything it said and said the coverage was worldwide so it would cover you in a rental car anywhere in the world. This is a A+ company and someone I have used before with no problems. Our coverage for 2 people for the rental car plus medical was under $5 a day(the best deal I found before this was $9 a day for the car only.) Their only stipulation was that you had to rent the car through a travel agent or someone like AAA so that they were sure it was a legitimate car rental company.

Since my original posting, I have gotten more information. This applies in TJ, but may apply in other border towns as well. It may be of use to others.

I have confirmed from both the national rental desk and the Tijuana local office that Hertz will allow a car rented in Mexico - In this case TJ - to be driven into the US. They do require Mexican insurance (which unfortunately for me, means that my current insurance, which attaches to my car cannot be used and I have to buy the insurance from Hertz to cover the car for Mexico for the whole rental, while only driving it in Mexico for about 15 minutes two times.

My US insurance, does cover rental cars and so, I will not have to get coverage for the rental car in the US. Had I no policy, I would have had to be insured by Hertz for both the US and Mexico for the whole time.

This solves a big problem for me. Now whenever I fly north, I can fly to TJ, with its low airfares and good schedules, get a car at the airport and be mobile in SoCal while I am there.

I will check out the insurance suggested by CRZ. If that works out, it will be even better.

Even if the previous insurance I suggested does not work for you try www.drivemex.com or www.accessamerica.com. They both offer the same amount of rental car coverage in Mexico for $9 a day that would cost you $33 to $35 a day if you get it from Hertz.
