We have an on demand system. It saves us a lot on propane. It is in a place that cannot be vented, but which is in a large open area, so any gas fumes dissapate. The water takes awhile to warm up and then gets only warm. Basically, I just turn on the hot water and don't bother to mix in cold water when showering. That way it is just fine. I forget the cost, but it doesn't matter as our regular heater was totally rusted out when we moved in and we had to replace it with something. I assume that the on demand heater is more expensive than the regular one, though am not certain. I do know that we have saved a lot on propane bills since we got it. Another nice feature is that it takes up almost no space, about two feet by 18 inches.
