Hot water heaters

Our hot water heater is dying and I want to replace it with an on demand gas heater. I can't see the point in keeping a 50 gallon tank hot all the time. However, my spouse is not as enthusiastic as I am, having vague childhood memories of what, in England, we called "the Ascot". Very dangerous they were - blowing up from time to time. We also had one in our house in Chile in the 80's, called this time "the calefont" - same problems. I am assuming that today they are much improved.

Do any of you have input for me, either for or against? I thank you in advance.

We have an on demand system. It saves us a lot on propane. It is in a place that cannot be vented, but which is in a large open area, so any gas fumes dissapate. The water takes awhile to warm up and then gets only warm. Basically, I just turn on the hot water and don't bother to mix in cold water when showering. That way it is just fine.

I forget the cost, but it doesn't matter as our regular heater was totally rusted out when we moved in and we had to replace it with something. I assume that the on demand heater is more expensive than the regular one, though am not certain. I do know that we have saved a lot on propane bills since we got it.

Another nice feature is that it takes up almost no space, about two feet by 18 inches.

We have an on demand heater and it is very good. Very hot water ..instantly. You do have to buy the correct size..ours is Cal rex but Bosch and other make them..Home Depot has them ..The only way to go..

Is yours gas or electric, 220v or 110v? SOB or NOB? Sorry about all the questions but I am looking into this and am interesting in purchasing one like yours if I could use it SOB.

Ours is Bosch, bought from and installed by, if I remember correctly, Aqua-Tech right here in Ajijic. I checked and found the following internet contact on it: Termotecnica@bsh-mx.com

The igniter employs a D battery and, I think, requires no wiring - only gas and water lines.

Gas - just about all water heaters SOB are gas. The cost of using electricity would be prohibitive.

We have gas in Mexico. I have one NOB that is electric but since the more electricity you use in Mexico your bill increases rapidly we use gas to heat water and cook.
