Flying to Veracrux redux

Can't Post | Private Reply
There was a thread a while back, about flying to Veracruz. I've done this a number of times, and my wife and I find we prefer flying direct to Veracruz from Houston on Continental. While at peak times (Xmas, Carnivale) it can be expensive, at other times it's very reasonable. I just booked a round trip from Chicago for US$422, whereas to Mexico City it's US$380. Just from the time and hassle factor it's well worth it. Drawback: the flight arrives at 11:00 p.m. and the return leaves at 7:00 a.m. But it's not really that late, you can get to the portales by midnight when the night is far from over. The Parroquia is usually open too.

Let me introduce myself, this is my first post. My name is Michael McLaughlin, I play the trumpet and teach in Chicago, and my wife Eva is from Mexico. Her mother and sister moved to Veracruz from Mexico City about ten years ago, and we are planning to do the same in a year or so. It's my favorite place in Mexico, not the least because of the music. I just joined Mexico Connect a couple of days ago and it is a terrific resource. I look forward to talking to everyone as time goes on. We'll be in Veracruz for a couple weeks in April, visiting and scouting around.

Welcome to MexConnect Mike! Yes, it is a great resource. Glad to hear you're planning on moving to Veracruz, we can use some reinforcements here in the Gulf forum.

Thanks for the info on the Continental fares.

Welcome Mike. My wife and I just flew in to Mexico City for $355 on US Airways and drove to Ver. Figure the savings covers the cost of the rental car, plus I like to drive.

Im in Hotel Playa Varadera in Coatzacoalcos, Ver at the moment. We were in Catemaco last week which is very busy with americans due to Mel Gibsons movie making. Some of my Wife's cousins saw Gibson when they were rehersing in an old factory in nearby Sihuapan. When they were shooting at the Salto de Eyipantla waterfall they closed it for 3 days and there was a big ruckus as a tour bus full of Spaniards could not get to see the falls. The police were involved but I think in the end they got in.

Mike:
¡Bienvenido al foro! Welcome to this forum! It is always good to have new people who want to know more about this wonderful part of México.
I just got back from the town of Naolinco with a couple from New York City and we had a great time watching the shoe and mask makers. Afterwards we went to the free University of Veracruz choir concert at the Casino Xalapeño just up the street from my home.
Keep your questions and ideas coming.
Are you a relative of Dave McLaughlin, owner of Mexico Connect? Let us know!

¡Mucho gusto y hasta pronto!

No relation to Dave. We McLaughlins have insinuated ourselves into all corners of the world. It appears we will be in Veracruz from April 2 to 17.

Welcome aboard.

We are big fans of Veracruz, including the music and dance.

I for one would be very interested in any information and reports on the music of Veracruz. I was just reading about a music festival in Veracruz, Encuentro de Jaraneros y Decimistas, Tlacotalpan, Veracruz. I posted something about it on this forum earlier. I have been wanting to get down to Mexico for a music festival for a while.

We like the danzon in Veracruz as well.

So anyway, put on your musician hat and post something about Veracruz music from time to time. I like the Huasteca music also.

Thanks for the welcome. No, I am not related as far as I know to Dave, but who knows how far back in the emerald isle the roots go.

Is the University of Veracruz you mentioned the one in Xalapa? I'm going to see if there is any teaching I can do there, it is supposedly a center of music in the area.

Whatever happened to the Afro-Caribe Festival held annually in Veracruz? Is it still on?

"El Festival de Música Afro-Caribeño" tends to be an "on-off" event depending on politics and budget. It usually happened in late March or early April before Easter. Several times there were free concerts in the Plaza Lerdo right downtown, which were excellent.
I'll try to find out what is up for this year. Hopefully "Junio Musical" is a sure thing.
¡Hasta pronto, amigos!
