Paul--If I remember correctly, Sanborn's might offer a temporary policy when you go back to the States. The first year, I was able to renew my US insurance ffom my previous carrier; I had to buy a 6 month policy, but after the 6 weeks in the US, I simply cancelled the remainder with no problem. The problem was that after I had been gone for more than a year, I was placed in the "high risk" pool, and the cost became very expensive. I also needed to have a current registration in the US, which I no longer had after a year. Maybe try registering your car in Texas?? THere is a lot of info on this board about doing that in Laredo, especially, I think...and then get insurance that way. Good luck.: I live in San Miguel de Allende full time and do not have American car insurance. Since I have lived down here I have not traveled in my Auto back to the states. XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
I don't know where you are crossing the border but if you cross at Nogales there are numerous places in Mexico that sell American insurance by the day, week, month. You can't miss them - they are right on the main highway. Seems like a safe assumption that they have them at other crossings as well.

Sanborn's Insurance in Hidalgo, Texas

Can't Post |
Their phone number is 956-843-8747. I have Texas tags on my car and I always leave it parked at the border (on the Texas side, of course). Hidalgo is just south of McAllen and right across the river from Reynosa, Tamaulipas, Mexico.
The e-mail address that I have for them is sales@dalomic.com. I buy insurance from them for a month to two months at a time. The minimun amount you can buy is for one month. The minimun coverage costs $58.
If you have tags from another state, perhaps they can point you in the right direction. More than likely, you will have to buy insurance from an agency in the state that you have your tags from.
When I request it, Sanborn's always faxes me a proof of coverage at no charge.
It seems like there is another insurance company called AMCO that sells one-month policies. Check their web site at www.getamco.com. Their phone number is 1-888-GET-AMCO. I believe that they have office all over the United States.
I hope that helps!
