Hello all; moving to Baja Sur

Can't Post | Private Reply
My wife and I have recently (last week) agreed to lease/purchase a house in Todos Santos. We have signed no papers (they apparently are being drawn up). Can anyone tell me about living in Todos Santos and the hope of owning a home there, esp. through a "lease/purchase"? I want out of the USA so bad, I hope I did not make a mistake. Any enlightenment would be appreciated.

There are hundreds of paths up the mountain,
all leading in the same direction,
so it doesn't matter which path you take.
The only one wasting time is the one
who runs around and around the mountain,
telling everyone that his or her path is wrong.

Me too, sort of ... I just (last month) bought a home in La Paz but don't live in the US and haven't been to Todos Santos. Could you please give some details on lease/purchase? I haven't a clue but could try to ask someone.

Yes, we agreed to $600.00 per month for 12 - 24 months. If we liked the house we could purchase it for $95,000 (US). The house comes with a gardener and a view of the Pacific Ocean. I'm happy. If we move in and decide this is not the area for us...we have the option of looking around Mexico.

We live in Tempe, Arizona and have so much materialistic stuff, I don't know what to get rid of. I'm thinking everything but my medical books/eqipment and my bed... What do the readers think?

This is a great site... Thanks for everything....

I emailed someone in the area asking about lease/purchase. It sounds like a great plan -- as you say, it gives time to look elsewhere if you aren't happy. But it surprises me a bit that owners would commit to a fixed sale price for up to two years ahead when housing costs seem to be rising so fast in BCS. Be sure to read the fine print on whatever you sign.

What to get rid of vs. bring to Mexico: there was a relevant thread a while back, but I can't locate it (someone else may remember). Only you can decide what you can't live without, but I found it useful to read how others were thinking.

Hi Dr. Mike

Don't know anything about that area. I just bought a house in Ensenada. The two gringo's I know living there love their life down there and would never go back they say. I am in Phoenix by the way, just loving the heat thats upon us now.

Sounds like you did a smart thing. I should have done that, but I have two large dogs and found a lot of resistance in the renting aspect, so I just went for it and bought something. Anyway, enjoy. Let us know when you get down there.

Mike,

I am certainly not a wealth of information about Todos Santos, but I have been there several times. I have a time share in Cabo San Lucas and nearly every time I have done there (to Cabo) we have taken a day trip to Todos Santos. Each time the place seems a little more alive with tourists.

My partner who lives in Hermosillo flies into La Paz and I drive from Cabo to La Paz to pick him up. It is a longer route going through Todos Santos, but I always do, because we like to stop at the Hotel California for lunch.

I find the town and the area delightful. La Paz is also very, very nice. Cabo is out of the question for us, as a permanent retirement location. Just too completely gringoficated for us.

I think most of the experts here would agree that your decision to rent for a while is a good one.

Best of luck to you.

You may want to check in with Linda Neill c/o The Settlement Company in La Paz; her services in guiding the real estate process should be very helpful to you. I exchanged several communications with Linda while house searching in La Paz (didn't buy anything yet).

Hola Mike,
My partner Jim and I purchased a small casita in the La Cachora neighborhood of Todos Santos in November of 2005. We try to get down there as often as possible. In fact we'll be there in November for most of the month. We love it there.
I'll be happy to share info,

In Reply To
but by now you may be an oldtimer. Let me know if we can help. Jackie
