Ajijic to Santa María is approximately 239.756 kilometers (using the toll road).

Driving to Laguna Santa Maria del Oro is a pretty long drive from Lakeside to just spend a day.... and the toll charges round-trip will be about $60.

The lake (and the surroundings) is drop-dead beautiful as it is an old volcano caldera. One sees it first from a vantage point at the top, and then you drive down a narrow, steep road to the lake surface. The eco-system down at the lake is so different than up on top that you would swear that you were on another planet! Some exotic and beautiful birds (rufous-vented Chacchalaca, and others) that we had never seen before.

There are 'motel' accommodations down at the lake called Koala Bungalows. Staying over-night would make the whole trip more enjoyable. Plan your trip for other than a weekend as it is a hot spot for boating/skiing and fast watercraft by area Mexican Nationals and partying at night. Otherwise it is tranquil (or least it has been the two times I was there).

I think you can get a 'driver' to take you almost anywhere for enough money. Someone local to Ajijic should be able to give you a name.

Enjoy.

I see the tolls posted from time to time but am not sure wether they are pesos or USD. Which is most common?

It costs about $90 US in tolls to travel from the border to Ajijic. Most of the cost is the tolls in Jalisco. From Tepic to Guad is $60 (according to a posting above with which I will not argue). Weird. They are nice roads, but hardly worth more than others along the way.

If you will pay the toll, I'll drive you wherever it is we are talking about if my wife will not have a tizzy fit if I do so. I love traveling in Mexico. I'm addicted to topies (that spelling looks really weird, but I'm going with it anyway). Topes (That's it - I've got it) are just like flying throught space - especially if you hit a really steep one that you don't expect. It will re-arrange everything in your car so you won't be bored.

Had some really nice tequila tonight - 1000 Agaves (Never heard of it before, but it is really nice).

Wowwww!! $60 to go 2 inches on my map.

"I'll drive you wherever it is we are talking about if my wife will not have a tizzy fit "

I'm not too much worried about being driven around. My cheaufer (spelling?) is a truck driver with millions of miles under his belt er.. butt. And it's his car anyway.

I'll assume that Nogales to Tepic is only about $30 then. Not too bad.

Many Thanks
Ron

Obviously, the tolls on the roads are posted in pesos. But it is confusing when people here post US dollar amounts and don't specify! We should be more careful.

OK, some clarification....

I said that the ROUND TRIP cost of the toll road from Guad to Laguna Santa Maria was $60 United States Currency. So, one-way would be about $30US. It may be a little less because Santa Maria is before Tepic and I don’t remember exactly where the toll booth lies.

Then, Ron says, “I'll assume that Nogales to Tepic is only about $30US then. Not too bad.” This deduction, I think, is using some logic he gleaned from another post that suggested the toll charges from Nogales to Guad would be about $90US. Thus $90US minus $60US leaves $30US. Except it should have been $90US minus $30US giving $60US.

Actually, Ron, I just made that trip a couple of weeks ago (Guad to Nogales), and the toll costs were $35 Guad to Maz, and $60 from Maz to Nogales = $95, all in US currency at the rate of 10.35 pesos to the dollar. Your mileage may vary.

OK. Thanks for the clarification Rick (and Mazdee). I've been trying to absorb so much from all the great help I've received from these forums that I'm having more & more senior moments (grey matter overload) and from trying to watch the Olympics at the same time.
Also, my entry point has changed to Nogales due to advice from the forum. I appreciate the link you provided for the trip and will use that as a guide (map) as it's easy to follow.
Sure don't know what I would have done without all the help & direction from the Mexconnect fora.
Haven't checked yet, but hope Verizon wireless is available once we cross the border. If not, we'll get by with wifi from time to time.
Thanks to everyone.

Hasta Luego

Another fishing spot in that general area is Lake Aguamilpa. It is due north of Tepic and about 50 miles farther than Santa Maria del Oro. There is a bass adventure club there (see URL below) but I understand that 'average' people can also fish there. As you will see from the pictures, this lake is the real thing for bass.
