New people signing up

Does anyone else check the "Who's Online?" I like to check it and have found that daily there are new people signing up. Are folks interested in Mexico or what?!! I'm amazed how many come on with such regularity. Just a comment and observation about the interest.

I seem to be getting something other than you are. All I get is who is on line at this time. I do not see anything about new members. I think that it is very good that we are getting new members but I just can not see that indicated on on line at this time.

Hi Jerry,
I click on the names that I haven't seen before and it shows when they have joined. Most often it's within a day or two.

I also think new members are a good thing. However, many only read and don't post,which is okay too if that's what they prefer.

Many of us do not post because we do not live in Mexico or have never been there so we do not have a lot to add. At least that is the case with me. As far as questions, most of them have been answered by all of you by just reading your posts. I am a few years from moving to Mexico, should I choose to do so, and am still working to convince my other half that it might be a good choice for retirement. My other half is old country German and she has a hard time leaving family and friends behind. We are working on that part. I do hope to convince her that we should at least take a trip there to check things out and see how we like it.

All of you keep up the good work providing the information and I will be happy to just pop in once in a while. With luck I will be able to make the trip to meet many of you in the next year or two.

Bonjour

We are two of those newbie’s who has just joined a month ago; I was referred from another site to this one and the Mérida forum. Has I have mentioned on the Mérida forum I congratulate everyone who has made this site so valuable & extremely informative. Even though I have just joined I have received and read more valued info about México than all my previous research combined. Between Mérida and Mexcon I have learned so much in the last month that I could not ask for more. I realize that sometime it must be frustrating answering the same questions over and over, I am sure it is not easy but it is greatly appreciated especially from newbie’s like us who are still learning to use the sites to its fullest. These two sites are extremely habit forming because of the wealth of knowledge found and the feed back from all of you is greatly respected. My wife and I are in the planning stages of a fall 06, long term move to Mexico and these sites have open our eyes to so much. Keep up the great work. Muchos gracias todos. Merci beaucoup.

I just joined a few weeks ago after "lurking" for several months. "Cost of admission" has been the best money I've spent in the past several years. I agree completely with Bonjours post. I must say though, it's very hard keeping all those yellow folders grey. I seem to recall there's a place Lakeside, where some of y'all hangout. Is it "Joes Place"?
Kindly let me know if I'm correct & I'll stop in sometime in March.

Hi CCarol

I am a new member as of today. I would like to post but I'm not very computer savvy and with my inexperience would not like to offend anyone. I'll give it a try sometime. My husband and I are thinking of moving to Bacalar (30 minutes from the border of Belize), hope to do a profile soon. We live in Austin, Texas and lived in Mexico (Veracruz and Sonora) for about two years. We love the people, culture,and most of all way of life.

Thanks to everyone who has responded to this thread. It's so good to hear from those of you who have been "lurking" for awhile. Yes, I agree with so much that all of you have said. This forum is my dreamland so to speak. I'm like some who are trying to get their spouses to visit or move (that takes some patience!). But it's almost like being there as I hear all the talk on the forum from the weather to where to buy cornmeal. I was busy today and first thing when I walked in the door I had to get on and see what I had missed!! Yeah, it sounds crazy but it's like having a second family.

I don't live in Mexico either but there are lots of items to comment about and next thing you know, you have another question. And, it is the best place on the web for learning about all of Mexico (in English) right from the proverbial "horses mouth."

Welcome to all you new folks!! (Heck, I'm still new myself).

Well, as one of the newbies, I thank you for noticing. This is a wonderful website, with a lot of useful information. I am so glad I joined. Though I grew up in the Lake Chapala area, that was a l-o-o-o-n-g time ago, and here I have found exactly the up-to-date information I sought. So I will take this opportunity to express my gratitude to those who put the effort into starting this enterprise and those whose contributions keep it going. I will try make what small contributions I can.

Hi, Ron -

You're probably thinking of Tom's Bar in Ajijic, located at Constitución #32 not too far from the plaza. Lots of the full-time residents of the area frequent the place, so it's a good spot for newcomers to check out and pick the brains of some folks who have been here awhile, and get some info and opinions from someone other than real estate agents. I read not long ago on another web board that Tom's is "a hangout for an elite in crowd," which I'm sure Tom would be surprised to learn because anyone is welcome there. It's friendly and fun, and you can get some pretty decent chow there as well. The place will be packed tomorrow, Super Bowl Sunday.

The usual disclaimers, no affiliation, etc., other than Tom being a good friend.

Don: let your other half know that there are more folks down here who can speak Deutsch than in Everett. Also let her know that we have the SEA-TAC channels 4,5,7,9, & 13 down here (via Star Choice) and that I will be watching the SuperBowl in High Definition.

Gete her down here once for a month, and I bet she will like the place.

I'm glad to hear that Gary. HD sure makes the game about 200% better. If you are a sports fan and watch an inportant game just once, you're hooked and will never go back to old fashioned TV.

Hi Gary.
Yep. That's the place. Thanks for pointing it out for me. I've been searching for that post you mentioned for two weeks now and could never come up with it. All I could remember was "Joes something or other". I'll be sure to stop in when we're there. Probably the 3d week in March (Marza, I think it is). I'm also looking for a small hotel located around there (also in a previous post). One street off the main street, Mexican Family owned that's supposed to have relatively inexpensive rooms to rent for a week or so. Will take care of that when I get there. Hope to see you there.

Hello Everyone,
As a new mexico-connect member, I've been watching from the side-lines trying to figure how this all works. I still don't know but, thought I'd jump in head first and get going. First, this is one of the best sites I've found so far regarding practical information on living in Mexico. Our list is long, renting, housing, location, health care, immigration status, learning the language, and on-and-on. Second, is there anyone who is from Upstate New York, (Finger Lakes, Cornell) area that would be willing to correspond with me? I know, you've heard it all before but, two more green horns are thinking of retiring to the Lake Chapala area. Well, that's what we think right now, we may change our minds after visiting this summer.

Right now, I'm looking for a good source to learn spanish. I've located a public school Spanish teacher that is willing to tutor but ,would like something to supplement the tutoring and perhaps the expense. Any suggestions on what has worked best for others to learn to speak simple conversational Spanish?

I don't live in the Finger Lakes area now, but I did live in Ithaca and attend Cornell for several years. I don't live in Mexico either, but I have travelled quite a bit there and plan to live there at some point. I know you won't miss the long, grey, cold winters. But Ithaca is wonderful in the late spring, summer and early fall. There are lots of cultural advantages of being around a major university that I know I would miss. Of course, there are lots of wonderful things in Mexico too, such as three hundred plus days of sunshine in much of the country. And you can also live near universities, but there are few like Cornell.

If you have more specific questions, send me a private message or just put them on the forum. Lots of people here know a great deal more than I ever will about Mexico and I mostly just read and learn. I just thought you might want to hear from someone who knows your territory.

P.S. to previous post. Try to go in the middle of the Finger Lakes winter or in very early spring. You'll have a better sense of the contrast. DON'T miss a day of the Ithaca summer. There are only 20 days of it arent there.

Hi and welcome to the forum. Regarding your question about a learning Spanish supplement, I would suggest to explore the Mexconnect site. There's a wealth of info that has been written in the past that could answer many of your questions. If you haven't already, just go to the top of this page and click on search posts. Type in a search "Spanish Tutor" and read a bit. You'll find some information about computer programs that are great for supplemental study in your home and and also CD's for your car.

You may be able to get Spanish language programming in your area on either Telemundo or Univision. It might be up in the higher numbered channels. I actually learned abit from the kids program "Plaza Sesamo" which is Sesame Street. After watching a puppet going up the stairs "ARRIBA" and down the stairs "ABAJO" about ten times I eventually caught on. To this day, though, I have not found a use for the expression : Brought to you by the number three and letter N.

Hi and welcome! I have a son and 2 grandchildren who live in the Binghamton/Johnson City area but have never lived there myself. What part of Mexico are you headed for? And when?

You should be able to hook up with a college student for private tutoring at a reasonable cost. Once to get to Mexico there are excellent language schools everywhere. There will undoubtedly be someone on the Live, Work, Retire forum who can give you the inside scoop on the best schools in your area. Also check out the MexConnect forum Learning Spanish, lots of good info and helpful folks there.

I used a video presentation which has added text materials when teaching Spanish in middle school in California. It is called "Destinos" and may be available at your public library. I think you can still purchase the whole program from the Annenberg/CPB collection..try to call them at 1.800.Learner. ¡ Buena suerte! Joan

We bought the DVD's and books on Ebay at a great discount. Destinos is great. The "soap opera" format is very interesting (even for non-soap opera fans) and we look forward to the daily lesson. Very clever on how they weave the teaching points into the story. If we had had this in the 50's, I might have learned a foreign language. Steve

Thank you for the address of Destinos. I have been looking for something exactly like this. I remember seeing the show on televison once or twice in the US. I will be using the program to freshen up my very rusty Spanish. Thanks for the useful information.

I lived near Watertown, NY for a few years, but it was a long time ago, late '70s. The area around Ithaca and the Finger Lakes is indeed beautiful - I used to go to races at Watkins Glenn so have been through there several times. Can't say that I miss those winters, though. Brutal! When you come down, you can leave your heavy jackets and all other cold-weather gear home. It's sunny and about 75 degress outside in Ajijic as I write this, and a couple of weeks ago while in Barra de Navidad on a fishing trip it was in the high 80s.
