I have taken a dog by car into the U.S. many times. NEVER have I had to show any papers for the dog. The last time, we brought a Mexican dog (he could pass for an american dog but only understood some odrers in spanish though) and we were worried. We got a certificate that said he had his shots. I think rabies is the important one but I am not sure. Sure enough nobody asked for any papers. My advice is to not worry and if they ask for the papers tell them the dog ate them. I would like to know if anybody has had to show dog papers ever.

for plane travel...and a question

for plane travel I had to have a certificate at both borders. According to the info US Customs gives out, the same requirements apply to everyone-but your experience seems to be the norm.
Are Mexican customs officials checking health certificates for pets in cars? I'll be driving there in February, and by the time i reach the border the paper will be 4-7 days old- it's supposed to be no more than 3 days old, last i heard.....Please write me directly if you have crossed with canines within the past 6 months. Thanks!!!!

we drove through brownsville this past june wtih a dog and a cat and back out in august with the same dog and two cats. supposedly, you are supposed to have rabies certificates and a certificate of health for each animal. it was not asked for either time, nor has it been asked for in the past. i figured if we got stopped, we would just turn around and go to a vet on the appropriate side of the border and get the certificate. the one time i flew with the dog from mex back to the us, they asked to see the papers at the airport in cancun, but did not check them once we got to philadelphia (we had a direct flight, which is why we went out of cancun.) hope this helps some.
: I have taken a dog by car into the U.S. many times. If you are driving to Mexico this is the last thing I would worry about. I have not crossed with a dog INTO Mex in the last 6 mos. but have done it numerous (10 +-) other times and have NEVER been asked for papers for the dog. As for my wife, they always ask for her papers.

We got our papers in order to come down

And plan to on the return, but no one asked for them. I guess I just try to be legal whenever possible. You need a rabies certificate for the US. I forgot if they require a certificate of good health as well.

: ann
We drove out of Mexico into the US at Juarez/El Paso in January 2001 and were asked for papers for our dog. May have been because we were Canadian? Luckily we had her certificate of rabies shot and a certificate of good health.

Hey Bill,is there an internet forum where ex-pats, snowbirds, etc. who spend time in or live in Puerto Escondido communicate with each other? I know it's kind of a silly question...

I think the closest thing would be http://www.tomzap.com/frm/list.php?f=5 . Message board. Keep posting until you get an answer. There are more post there as soon as the high season kicks in but people check it out all the time. It is a good place to ask questions and share experiences. It is pretty much just Puerto stuff but sometimes there are things that would cover all of Mexico.
