XM RADIO IN CENTRAL MEXICO

Can't Post | Private Reply
I have XM radio and it works great here south of Guadalajara along the shores of Lake Chapala. I have the boom box and the rectangular satellite antenna that measures about 2.75 by 3.25 inches. And I get a pretty strong signal When up North for New Years, I picked up the unit that allows me to install my XM radio in my car. The satellite antenna that came with this unit is much smaller. It measures about 1.375 by 1.75 inches and can attach magnetically to the roof of my car. Guess what? The smaller dish doesn't always get a my stations. No problem. I have an extra 2.75 by 3.25 inch dish that I can attach (masking tape) to the roof of my Ford Explorer. Does anyone else have any experience with this small antenna this far south?

Hi Pete,

We've got the larger one you describe on the roof of the RV and it works great here in the Yucatan and most points in between. I also have the smaller version in the jeep but just realized I hadn't had it on since we got down here, I'm partial to my ipod these days, so I'll try it tomorrow and let you know.

Pete

I am a novice at this satellite stuff, so I apologize right up front.

I think I can do this and just wanted to confirm it with you.

I was planning to buy a XM Roady XT here in Portland, register it and bring it down. In addition I will buy both (separate of course) dock stations for the car here NOB and the casa there, SOB. I think (not sure) I have to have the XM boom box for the casa, unless you are going to tell me that the Roady can feed into my existing boom box stereo which is about 3 years old.

I realize I will need an antenna for Mexico. I was reading your description of the XM antenna here on M/C. Is there a model number on the attenna you suggest for MX.

Final question. The attenna is hard wired correct, not wireless to the Roady?

thanks & by the way we are closing the month in the Paciific Northwest with over 12" of rain in January. I know you don't miss Skagit County for the moment. But the tulips will like it, I am sure.

Pete et al,

In December I drove down to Lakeside from Colorado (and recently drove back). I have the smaller magnetic antenna that you mentioned. What I found was that, somewhere around Zacatecas or a little north, I began to loose some channels but others still came in strong. At Lakeside there were some channels that just would not come in at all (loading... loading... loading), and the ones that I could get fine if I was out on the open road would drop out if I went under the least bit of a tree or was going thru, say, San Juan Cosala, or was between a lot of buildings on each side of the car.

On the trip back, I went thru Mazatlan. About there or a little north all the channels started coming back in strong but would disappear momentarily is I went under an underpass. By the time I hit the border, all channels came in strong no matter what the surrounds were like, even going thru underpasses.

Thanks all for your input. What you tell me, Rick, explains why the small standard antenna I tried here in Ajijic did not work that well. (Or it confirms that it is acting as expected) Brad, the larger antenna that I mentioned above, that works just fine this far south comes as standard hardware on the boom box and the home unit and it is interchangeable with the smaller one mentioned above that comes with the car unit (it plugs into the car unit). I have an extra larger antenna from an older boom box that was damaged from a wiring error, the radio was exposed to 240 volts, which I shall install on the roof of my Ford Explorer.

Yes, the antennas are hard wired, be they for your car or your home. Brad, the equipment you mentioned above sounds just right. Just understand that the small antenna that one would normally place on his car up North, is too small for down here. But that the antennas offered with the boom box and home kit are large enough.

Just a thought but worth a try. Take a 10 or 15 foot length of 18 to 24 gage wire, wrap a few turns of wire around the existing antenna and string the rest of the wire out & see what happens.
Getting older and still not down here.

If your existing boom box stereo includes an FM radio receiver you can use the Roady through that. Works pretty well particularly in a closed area like a house, I use mine that way in my jeep and it works.

I was about to "hook into" this satellite radio business, when my 21 year old nephew said......."What about podcasts?"...... I said pod-what....... "Podcasts, he repeated."

I had heard about these Apple I-pod music players and MP3 gizmos, I told him that I am really a cave man with all of this stuff, so he gave me a LIVE demo.

He asked, "What do you like do you listen to Tio Bru?" I bit. I said I was a progressive news and cultural awareness junkie. I like NPR, BBC, jazz, classical, ALL music (except country and mariachi) on and on. I can easily live without Howard Stern and talk radio.

SO he took me on this journey of MP3 compressed audio information. Long story short you connect your I pod or MP# player to the computer and down load audio files from KOPB or WHBG or ?????? This happened quickly here, like in 2 minutes he had loaded a full days worth of selected programming and he actually left me his I pod player (JBL something) that looks like a small space ship. Great sound. I listened to my favorite NEWS program ALL THINGS CONSIDERED and had a day FULL of music and fairly current news. (1/2 day old)

The neat thing is that you can download this information from anywhere/any time of day. Ajijic, Moscow, Baghdad......anywhere.

So now I am "re-thinking" this monthly subscription fee to XM. Not saying it is not a great service, but this I-pod gizmo is clearly the future. Somewhat like TiVo television programming. I will probably pay the same amount for the I-pod and never have to pay the monthly. I MUST admit tho, I do SUPPORT generously my Public Broadcasting Station in Portland, OR, KOPB. They are excellent.

my nephew told me of a site where entire books are on audio files for free and can be downloaded in short order.

Below is a list of some of the Public Broadcasting sites available now on Pod casts.

Happy Listening
