Alternative to SKY dish TV?

Can't Post | Private Reply
I'm in Gto. Gto, and looking for a satelite company that provides US network programing.
I searched posts and one was mentioned and a website was given. I went there but there
was no link or phone number to contact the company. SKY offers some of the US cable
channels but I would like to receive programing from the major networks, NBC, ABC and
CBS. Can anyone point me in the right direction.
Thanks a bunch,
Don R

Daniel Guerra can fix you up. He's a good guy, speaks English and is punctual. Here's some info:

I was going through these questions on a provider in Guanajuato a few years ago. After much research I decided to give Canadian Starchoice a try. I am very glad that I did, as I am more than happy with it, and beleive that the programming is superior to anything available from the US. Actually I find it very difficult to tell that I am watching a Canadian service. If I showed Starchoice to someone for a few hours they would think it was American. I paid US$179 for my receiver, 59 for the LNBF and I got the 1.2 meter dish in Celaya for about US$140 new. I pointed it myself and am currently receiving a siganal strength of 80%. I have alot more details on everything concerned with this if you are interested in Starchoice.

Yes, ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, and PBS. After three years, I have never watched ABC, CBS, NBC, or FOX once. In fact I can't remember watching a network since the
1960's, which was the last time they were any good. PBS I watch all the time.

I assume there are 'programming' charges from the Starchoice ?

What are the total charges per month, besides the original investment ?

Can you provide us with the names and phone numbers of the stores where you purchased the equipment, as well as the names and model numbers of what you purchased ?

Thanks in advance !

I am shocked Smile that so few of you know about Star Choice. But then again I am a nerd and had a star choice receiver here in Mexico, 2 months before the launching of the satellite Anik F-1 that sent the signal to all of North America and much of Central America. As I recollect signals started at 2 AM Monday morning about Feb 21st, 2001. At 9 AM that morning I had two local satellite dealers up to the house so they could see the product. Now I bet there are 1000s of star choice receivers around Lake Chapala.

I got my equipment for a couple of hundred dollars in Canada. It becomes more expensive the farther south you go.

To learn more about Star Choice, to to www.starchoice.com and start reading. You can learn about the programming, and the costs up North. In Ajijic you can pay anywhere from $550 US up to more than twice that much for a system I paid a couple of hundred dollars for. Be careful. There are good and bad satellite dealers out there. Some charge almost twice as much as the others because they can get away with it.

I like Star Choice better than DISH or C band but then again I can watch the same hometown network stations some even in HD that I did when I lived in Seattle and at my Summer home just south of Vancouver BC

I purchased my equipment from Global Communications: http://global-cm.net/. I suggest you go there and do alot of reading under "The Canadian Solution". I'm currently paying US$62 and I'm getting what you'd normally get from a US service plus more, and including 8 movie channels. Like Pete said, look at starchoice.com,also. I installed and pointed my own dish as a complete novice, so the whole thing was very cheap for me. Recently I heard someone talkng of paying US$1000 for equipment and installation, but I paid about US$400, and did it myself.

Hey Johnv: You made a very good choice. Mike Kohl the owner of Global Communications is a very honorable person who sells great products at a reasonable price. I have purchased other products from him in the past and will purchase from him again. You will be hard pressed to get a better price in the US.

He will be the first to tell you that, his prices are great for persons who live in the states and want to buy a Canadian system but that for those of you who live in Canada, you can get a better price by ordering directly from Star Choice (for delivery in Canada).

I also bought my system from Global Communications and I used Cathy tvm@tvmdeicom.ca as the broker since I am not Canadian and don't have a Canadian address. I recommend her too. I have the NFL package and 2 US network feeds, Seattle and Buffalo NY.

AH HA!!! you've said the magic word. I have just joined the forum, and I am thinking of moving to the area around Victoria, You mentioned Dish. I use dish, and I have been wondering whether I could continue to use dish (with or without a US address), Technically it seems right, Just to aim it differently. Same goes for Satelite internet. Any suggestions????

THANKS

Dish will work just fine, but you are quite far south. Here in Ajijic which is perhaps even farther south rather than one smaller satellite dish like you use in the states, you will need two satellite Dishes, one at about 1.3 meters and the second at 2 meters in Diameters and even then you will not get the local spot feeds that provide most cities with their home town stations.

So yes you can continue to watch DISH in Victoria, but you will need special equipment

I forgot to answer the satellite internet question. If you already have satellite internet, chances are it will work just fine in Victoria. But if you do not already have your satellite internet system and you are contemplating living in town, why not just hook up to broadband, perhaps through your cable company or via Prodigy Infinitum?

After posting my que4stions, I called Disk and asked about it.

1. They denied that anyone could be using Dish in Mexico, and further,
2. said that it wouldn't work in Mexico, even with a US adress. Apparently they don't want people to know.

I also checked locsation. I would be about 300 miles north of you (200 miles due south of Brownsville Texas.

And, as for internet satilite, the advantage is to have no need for a telephone hookup, and I don't know about Mexican phone Cos, but US companies are getting almost impossible to deal with.

Thanks for the info.

It is in violation of US regulations to sell DISH programming outside of the US. However to the best of my knowledge one is not breaking any laws receiving programming from where-ever in Mexico. I am guessing that there are 5000 + gringo families here in Jalisco. I bet about 1/3rd of them have DISH network.

Another 1/3rd has the Canadian STar Choice system and the remainder either cable or nothing.

Oh and some of my neighbors have both.
