Cornmeal in Michoacán

Can't Post | Private Reply
Where could one get cornmeal? It doesn't have to be water mill stone-ground, just yellow corn meal. (Not masa harina, just untreated yellow cornmeal?)

I want to bake some cornbread and maybe make some http://www.pbase.com/panos/image/39578307

Here in Guadalajara I frequently buy regular cornmeal in bulk at either the Mercado Abastos or the Libertad. I suspect that you will find it wherever bulk grains, seeds, beans and chiles are sold in Morelia or Pátzcuaro. There's a young man at the Pátzcuaro market, not too far from the Rivepan bakery, who sells a lot of that sort of thing. He's in the block north of the bakery, on the opposite side of the same street. You might ask him for it.

Gracias, Esperanza. I have looked for cornmeal for 3 years now and have never found it in Mazatlan. If I can't find it here, maybe I will import some next time I am in Guad.

We don't have it in SMA or Queretaro or Celaya..Neither cornmeal or grits..For me that is an imported item along with blacyeyed peas..Isn't it that what you don't eat often NOB when it is unavailable in Mexico -you crave it..crazy !!

UPDATE: We didn't find that young man nor his store, but now I have my mental map realigned, i think I now where to look. I'll bet that we walked right by him, twice.
Aside
I noticed cacahuates crudos for sale at Supercodallos, on Avenida Codallos, and I bought a half kilo with which to make peanut butter.

Lo bueno: we found that stand today, and he had maíz molido. We bought 2 kilos.

Lo malo: we got it home, and it had bugs in it.

En fin: We are tough, and used to "extra protein", so the cornmeal is now in the freezer for a day or two.

Take four rednecks
Add: Lots of Corn
Shoot: The Rednecks
Give: The corn to the nearest pigs along with the Redneck Meat.

So far, I have made some delicious Tortus de Maíz Con Queso Azúl y Miel.

(These were the prototypes, in Benia de Onís, Asturias)

The next item, yesterday morning, was some good ol', Southern sour milk Cornbread. (although this Pátzcuaro cornmeal is yellow, not white, as required by Southern Law.)
It has a very gritty and coarse texture, which we found pleasant. We had it with honey and butter, and small rolls of thinly sliced jamón de pierna.

Buen provecho,
