Flower name?

The photo wouldn't copy. I will try again later. Here is a link to it I hope. http://Papirex.smugmug.com/photos/45277412-L.jpg

Anybody know the name of this flower? It bloomed in our front patio. My wife can't remember the name of it in Spanish. She says the name in English means "Queen for one night", because it only blooms at night for one night then it begins to die.

It is a really delicate and beautiful bloom. After Doris brought my attention to it, I noticed a couple more of the flowers that had bloomed a few days before and they were starting to wilt.

The wife says she has always known it as the name you quote, only said in Spanish. "Reina por una noche".

Thank you Don, and Dolores57, it has been driving me nuts not knowing the true name for it. I guess it is rare; it is the only one I have ever seen also. I don’t usually get too exited about flowers, but this one is kind of breathtaking it is so delicate and beautiful.

Now I can put the true name of it on the caption in my Smugmug galleries. I need to ask my wife if she or her mother had our gardener plant it, or if it was here when we moved into this house. If one of them bought it, I want to know where they got it in case something ever happens to it, although it looks like a pretty sturdy shrub.

The flower in the picture bloomed on November 11, 2005. I don’t know if they bloom at other times of the year. I’m keeping a closer watch on it now.

Those are easily propagated. I have one that I "liberated" a cutting of from a classroom where I went to school 35 years ago. Just snip off one of those little branches and stick it in some moist potting soil. What I never could predict was when it would bloom. One year it gave me 35 blooms. The next five years nothing. Guess the poor thing was tired.

They were quite common in Florida around the Tampa Bay area.

Genus name is Epiphyllum. It is not Hylocereus undatus.

Thanks John, I have corrected the caption name for the photos of the flower on my Smugmug site. My knowledge of flowers ranks right down there with my expectations of where the Peso is going Unsure
