Stop lights

I was driving home last night very late and as I was crusing along at about 30 mph on a dark lonely stretch of road that is busy during the day, but DEAD at night, I came up to a stop light. And it turned red. Now this was about 12am and I was the ONLY car in any direction and the light had been green for a very long time. So, being the model citizen (or resident in Mexico), I stopped. And I waited. And I waited. For probably about 2 minutes before that light turned green. Of course, I could have gone right through it and no one would have known, but after about the first minute, I was curious to see how long it would take to change.

What is the deal? Sometimes I think the lights have a mind of their own and change just to annoy me. Or maybe there is a couple of guys with cameras and switches that are laughing up in their little control tower.

What happens down in Mexico...Stays in Mexico.

Ok; and what's the deal when your cab driver goes through what appears to be a red light, but all the cross traffic is also stopped, and it seems ok? Why and how is this done?

Well done. You need to follow these stop lights. But in night with no traffic you can overlook these stop lights

Depends where you are. I'm open to correction on this, but my understanding was that in D.F., one can go through a red light between 10 PM and 6 AM after coming to a complete stop. Of course, "complete stop" seems to be measured in miliseconds by some.

I've lived in DF for 12 years now, I'm still wary of traffic lights. I won't barrel through even if it's a green light.

I'm not sure it's an official transit rule @Richmx2, but certainly agree no one pays much attention to stops lights when traffic dies down. At 10pm most of DF is still busy...it seems mostly after midnight.

Take with a grain of salt. Much like all transit rules in DF; even if it's written, it's open to individual interpretation.

Straight on red is the norm in Nuevo Laredo after hours when there is little traffic on the road. When I first moved here I actually had people behind me hit their horn when I didn't pass through. I usually will wait for the green, except during the early morning when I'm going to work. I am not going to sit at a light on a dimly lighted street with no traffic---a couple of unsettling experiences in the past two years.
