Preparing Nopales: Can They Be Eaten Raw?

Can't Post | Private Reply
Bought a 5 peso pag of cleaned nopales today in the Pátzcuaro mercado. Made a salad with them as part of the ingredients. (Soaked in disinfectant solution 12 minutes, too.)
Said salad good. But, suddenly realized: never eaten raw nopalitos before. Is it ok?

(Never mind, I'll let you all know if it has dire effects.)

We had raw nopal salad at a restaurant, which may or may not indicate that they are safe. The thing I'm curious about is how do you eat it raw without it tasting really slimy?

The strips of nopalitos truly looked disgusting as slime dripped off them, but, on the other hand, they went down easily. ;-)

At any rate, no dire effects were felt. I probably wouldn't repeat this experiment.

I like raw nopales in a salad. I have eaten them many times with no ill effects.
