Dish TV in Ajijic

I know this subject has come up before and I've read the posts. What we really want to know is what channels you can actually receive here with Dish. Pete - I know you like Star Choice and we actually have a Star Choice receiver with this house - but - no ESPN and that's huge in my spouse's list of requirements.

I'd love to hear from anyone who is using Dish and can tell me more or less what they are getting.

Mil gracias and Happy New Year to all.

This is what you can receive absent the local channels. Instead, you can order the distant networks which will give you, for example, ABC, CBS, NBC from both NY and LA. You can also receive national feed of PBS. Hope this addresses your question:

Thanks Brian. Now, I'm technically incompetent - is that list what one SHOULD receive or what one CAN receive in this area?

We get ESPN and a couple of ESPN spin offs, HBO (about six channels), CNN and several other news channels, History Channel, and various homebody networks, among others. We get only a couple of Spanish language channels and none with English speaking and Spanish subtitles. I really regret that as I really think I got a lot of good experience with Spanish by watching such movies on our recent trip.

Be careful about which US network package you get. East Coast prime time starts at 7 and ends at 10. West Coast starts at 10 and ends at 1, a little late for people like me who can barely stay up until 10. We were told that we could not get both east and west coast, so we ordered a couple of west coast local channels and ended up without them and with both coast feeds.

Here is a link to a webpage that answers your specific question: http://dbstvforum.com/ubb/Forum11/HTML/000131.html
I would suggest you browse around the whole forum for related information. We find having both networks to be a real convenience. If you have the chance, you might also consider buying one of the Dish receivers with DVR so that you can automatically record favorite programs for later viewing.

If you decide to get DISH while lakeside, make sure you shop arround. Some dealers charge much more than others. I am writing this from the state of WA where I got my DISH system for free. I could have purchased the system in Mexico where I would have paid perhaps $800.

Should you have a home in the US, you can get your system for free, bring one of the satellite receivers with you, and buy a larger satellite Dish or two (plus LNBs) to allow you to pick up DISH Network Programming.

WITH STAR CHOICE, should you have property in Canada, you can get a Star Choice System for free as well, the difference is, that the Standard larger Star Choice 75E dish that you can get for free in Canada, will work in Mexico at least as far south as Lake Chapala

Hey Pete, it works farther than that. We are in Chiapas with Star Choice and it is working fine from a 75 elliptical dish. Not being Canadians, we used a broker and paid for the sat and receiver but it's worth it.

How does that work if you want to get a service for two TVs at the same time - different programs. Can we bring a receiver from the US and tie into our exhorbitantly priced Mexican system or will we need a second dish? What about chips for the receivers? Our Dishnetwork service is out of Texas, I think. How do we add the second receiver to our service?

Thanks as always, Donna, for the great input. What kind of signal strength are you getting on say channel 298 which is the French info channel and from Anik F-2 and on channel 299 which is the English info channel and on the Anik F-1R satellite?

You ask a good question. Sadly some of the installs in Mexico, where dealers in an effort to make an extra buck, are sharing your account with others, make it difficult for you to add receivers. But assuming you have an honorable dealer, he can sell you an extra receiver or two with no problem.

I received three for free at my WA home, two were expensive HD models and the third a standard receiver. All I had to do is sign up for one year. You can not get your equipment for free in Mexico

Because I buy my programming directly from DISH here in the states and do not have to use a middle man in Mexico, my programming rates are cheaper than if I were to subscribe in Mexico.

Don't get me wrong, I think it is great that some middleman in Mexico is providing a service for those who do not have a US address. I am only suggesting that most of us do have such an address be it our own or that of a child or grandchild. And that by using said address, and obtaining all up North one can save a great deal of money.

Not sure how to find what you are asking. The signal strength we found says 25 on A4. We are sort of in between right now. This is the first time we've connected our receiver and we signed up in October so we figure it needs a "hit" to be active. We are parked with friends though who also have *Choice and we have connected our receiver to their sat hoping that it will get hit and active. So far, 3 days, no luck. So while we are watching *Choice, we're doing it on their receiver, ours isn't working yet. It keeps saying not authorized but does give the above signal stength. I'm going to send the broker an email today to see if they can get it authorized again.

I just asked Bobby, our friend with the working receiver, and he is unsure how to check the strength on a certain channel as well. He showed us how to go into the menu and get a signal strength but it's for everything he thinks.

Hi Jonna: It sounds like you did it right; just tune the receiver to the channel in question, say #299. And if you do not have a new HD receiver, grab the remote, click on Options, then #6, then on #3 and then on #1 and your signal strength for A4 like you said will show up.

Here in BC & WA I get about 91, when in Ajijic, I get about 44 to 49 .

A signal strength of 25 is lower than desired, but will still bring in a signal unless a rain storm shows up, something that isn't likely to happen in Mexico at this time of the year.

Hey, it's working on our receiver now! I got up and checked my email and the broker said that StarChoice had resent the authorization.

This is pretty amazing that we're sittin here on a grass field behind a hotel in San Cristóbal at 9:30am watching the 7:30am rush hour news in Seattle, WA. Oh, and I'm online with another satellite. What a hoot!
