Zona Libre

I have been running into a term, "zona libre" in my readings about places in Baja California. I have no idea about the meaning of the term, or where I can obtain some information about it. Perhaps, someone here is knowledgeable and can direct me? I would be most appreciative. Thanks in advance. Paul

I am just guessing, but I think
it refers to the Free Trade Zone
established mutually by the Mexico
and US Governments.

Baja CA free trade zone

In Baj California ONLY there exists a non-tariffed zone which explains some of the cheap perfume prices in TJ, and the stores in La Paz with several hundred imported watches for sale. They made this deal with the mainland when they achieved statehood in the 50's.
This is also why there is so much customs searching as you leave Baja by car or ferry.
pernel
