Blanket Project for Patzcuaro

Can't Post |
Seasons Greetings! Once again the cold weather has arrived here in Patzcuaro. For the previous 2 years Sandra Mendoza and Deborah Peackcock have been volunteering with various groups in the community to raise funds for blankets for the elderly, children in the casa hogar system and families in need. They'd like to ask for your help and support. Sandra is in charge of the Sagrario church hot lunch program for the elderly (Monday thru Saturday) here in Patzcuaro. This program has been in existence for 9 years. This program provides a hot nutritious meal for between 20-30 elderly people every day. For most of them this program provides their only meal of the day. The Sagrario church, located at the corners of Lerin and Portugal streets, also provides monthly dispensas (basic necessities of rice, beans, oil, sardines, etc) to those in need. There are about 90-100 seniors (tercero edad) between the ages of 64 and 100 who come to the Sagrario and are in need of warm blankets. Most of them live in very difficult conditions, are ill and have no family and/or have little or no income. Those of you here in Patzcuaro may have noticed it is getting very cold at night and will most certainly continue to get colder throughout the next few weeks. For those of you who are not in the area, winters here get close to/or below freezing and the majority do not have any source of heat in their homes. For the last 2 years they were very successful in raising enough funds for 200 blankets – in addition to the elderly, blankets were given to the orphanages, homeless people, families of the incarcerated, those in drug and alcohol rehab programs, etc. They are able to get good quality blankets for $60 pesos (about $5.50 US) from a local supplier. THEIR GOAL AGAIN IS 200 BLANKETS!! The Sagrario will gratefully receive any blankets that are new or gently used in good condition. For those of you living in Patzcuaro, you may drop off a blanket, sweaters, coats or warm apparel on Wednesday at the Sagrario or contact Deborah Peacock and she´ll come by and pick them up. She can be reached at (434) 342 5237 or cell (443) 373 3051 or via email at deborah_peacock@ml.com.mx (there is a _ between deborah and peacock) or directly to this email. Sandra can be reached at her store – Terranee Boutique – Benito Mendoza No. 2-A, Patzcuaro (434) 342 0091. Donations can also be given to either of the padres at the Sagrario – in the name of the Blankets project – proyecto cobijas. Thank you for your time and we hope you have a warm holiday season and a prosperous new year
