Airfares and airports

Anyone have any relatively safe ways of getting to SMA. Although I'm coming from California, don't hold that against me, I'd be interest in how you'al (community) make the trek. It seems like there are not many direct flights to BJX (Leon) and what is available ain't cheap. Is it safe, convienent to fly into Mexico City, and then take a bus or van to SMA? I'm open to any option, except Burro, I'd appreciate any help you can provide. I plan on moving after my house sells and need to take a least one prior trip, sin Los Perros, to try to find a place to rent. Thanks

SMA already has some Californians, so welcome. As for getting here, my son visited last spring and found the cheapest travel was flying to Guadalajara and taking the executive bus to SMA from there.

What is an executive bus? Buncha guys with briefcases? Seriously. I am clueless, which means Sarkus is likely clueless too.

ETN and Primera Plus are advertised as such in the tourist periodicals. This means you get a toilet on board which is supposed to be working and a really bad movie on the ride. Maybe two. Comfy seats, though.

If a person is over about 5ft. 10in. tall, ETN and Primera Plus are NOT the same quality--pick ETN if possible. Just for Sarkus' information, the bus from Guadalajara to SMA takes about 5-6 hours.

I'm sort of surprised that no one's mentioned QRO as an option.

Flying into MEX and taking the bus or arranging to have someone pick you up is another option.

One thing you have to consider is how much aggravation and time sitting on a bus you're will to put up with to save money. There was day, not so long ago, when there was no BJX, no QRO, and getting to places like SMA took an element of hardy pluck.

. . . hardy pluck.

Jennifer, you know as well as I that hardy pluck is not what San Miguel Gringos are made of. They are cushy and soft, like a nice pillow. They want it easy like.

I have gone to SMA from Mexico City by a bus from the airport to Queretero and then taking a taxi from Queretero. I have gone by ETN bus, which goes to the north bus terminal.

I suggest the ETN bus, they are real luxury, only three seats across instead of four.

Do not take random taxis in Mexico city, due to taxi robberies. The airport and bus station have a system where you buy a taxi ticket at the taxi ticket window and take it to the official taxi stand.

Continental has flights from LAX to Queretaro.......from the airport you can take taxi to Bus station in Queretaro...hence bus to SMA or have someone pick you up...only 45-miles to SMA from Airport.

I have experience with three options - Leon, Qto and MExico City - and have used Viajes San Miguel in all cases with satisfaction - their website (http://www.viajessanmiguel.com/ ) gives info on all their services and their prices. The additional time for door to door service from Leon and Qto is about 1 and 1/2 hrs and from Mex about 5 hrs. Price is about $25 per person (pp) each way from Leon/Qto and $250 per trip from Mex although they do offer cheaper pp service involving car transfer to/from exec bus at either end between Qto and Mex City. Using Viajes San Miguel or equivalent avoids night driving and or bus station hassle.

From LAX, fly to Queretaro. One thing though. This flight is a red-eye, leaving at 12:30 am and arriving about 4:30 am. So be prepared. You could stay in Queretaro for a few days and enjoy the city if you haven't been here before. Zoe

Just found out the LAX to QRO flights have been cancelled after January 10. Too bad. Now Angeleinos will have to fly to Houston to get to Queretaro direct. I think the problem was the red-eye to QRO. Who wants to fly half the night?
