FM3 to FM2 after a year and a half

I'd like to apply for an FM2 and I've only had an FM3 a year and a half. A local Notario here says he can help this process along. I'm wondering if I would fare just as well applying myself. Has anyone else here had experience with this?

Do a search here--this has been discussed. Mainly, it is either possible or impossible depending where you live. In the state of Guanajuato, you must maintain an FM3 for 5 full years before they will grant an FM2. Other states seem to have different rules--which is, of course, ridiculous but true.

Forgive me for being nosey, but why would you want to do that? An FM2 costs more and has a higher income requirement. So far as I can tell it has no redeeming virtues.

The Notorios here allow different home capital gains treatment if you have an FM2.

Though not that common, it is possible in Guanajuato to get an FM2 before the 5 years on an FM3. I know a few who have. The problem is figuring out the easiest and cheapist way to go about it.

I would want to see proof that it is possible in Guanajuato. I asked every year for 5 years at INM and they said "no". I work for a notario in Leon and he said "no". What did I do wrong? Good luck.

This is another one of the little mysteries that exist. I know someone who started with an FM-2 here in Mazatlan based on her personal circumstances. I also know someone who converted from an FM-3 and ended up being fined for being away from Mexico for more than the allowable time permitted by the FM-2 status. An FM-2 doesn't fit all foreigners, and there are things to consider before converting.

The only "proof" I have is that my neighbor was able to get it. The person he used to expedite the process is no longer in town. I'll just have to apply and take my chances.

Hi,

I have an FM2 after 2 years in Oaxaca. I think the fact that I have not left the country in 2 years had a bearing. For me I want to be citizen so an FM2 is the place for me.

Having a business here and the fact that I set up and write for www.ilovehautulco.com promoting the area also had a bearing I feel.

Basically it can be done.

Each State has its own interpretation I do not think that leaving or not leaving the country has anything to do with it. In Jalisco we applied for an FM2 after 4 years and we got it.
You do not need a FM2 to apply or get the Mexican nationality, you need 5 years of residence, it can be done on an FM3 .

Hotel guy, an FM2 used to be on the path to citizenship, but not any more as Bubba said. All you need is 5 years living in Mexico. Read the word here: http://www.sre.gob.mx/...ault_nationality.htm
