Driving About Guatemala or for that matter, El Salvador

Thank you jhutt for your remarks on your experience driving about Guatemala. I have no doubt we could drive our Mexican plated vehicle all the way to Panama should we desire to so do.

We will take our car into Guatemala and drive to Antigua that first day and be sure to leave Tapachula early in the morning.

Whether we are super careful or super careless, we will only be here so long

We heard there were so many bridges out after Hurricane Stan. What was your experience in that regard? We have a good friend here in Aguascalientes who is Guatemalen (sp?). She and her husband (who is an American) usually go to Guatemala once a year. We'd like to make the trip to her home with them some day.

I just found out something useful from my insurance agent in Guadalajara. My Mexican auto insurance company fully covers us while driving our Mexican plated car in not only Guatemala but the states and Canada as well. The only possible exception is liability insurance which I may have to purchase at the Mexico/Guatemala border. They even have a number in Guatemala (and Canada and the states) for me to call in the event of a problem. He's going to get back to me on the liability issue which, if necessary, is probably inexpensive.

As for the roads, we are primarily concerned about the Pan American highway to Antigua and the primary road to Copan at least to the border with Honduras. I can't imagine that those are not open. Back roads are another matter after Stan.
