Puerto Angel to Oaxaca City

Has anyone driven this route up Highway 178? If so, any input on timing or sights worth stopping for?

I drove it in the opposite direction. Here is what I posted about it in response to a question back in August:

We just drove Oaxaca to Huatulco over the mountains and via Puerto Angel (actually we turned at Pochutla, but you're more likely to recognize Puerto Angel). While this is a different route than Oaxaca - Puerto Escondido road (they kind of run parallel) the distance is about the same and it goes over the same mountain chain, so barring bad road conditions it ought to be about the same.

Took us 8 hours (+/-) to go the 270 km. Road was good, we didn't hit any rain or fog, but that's one winding sucker of a road. It was a drive that didn't give me much chance to gawk around. But I wouldn't call it dangerous. It would probably take even longer coming back from the coast because you have a longer uphill stretch.

I didn't have time to take my eyes off the road to look at any sights. But there were a number of mountains and valleys. Fran said it was pretty. There were some cabañas at San Jose del Pacifico where i thought it might be nice to stop for a couple of nights and hike around the area. Pretty chilly there for an Ajijic dweller, I reckon.

Oh yeah, long way without gas stations. Fill up before leaving Dodge.

Enjoy the trip.

I've taken the drive between the coast and Oaxaca City several times, going down both highway 175 (Oaxaca-Pochutla) and 131 (Oaxaca-Puerto Escondido) and it's been generally smooth. The occasional landslide may set you back a few hours during the rainy season, but the roads are in generally good shape. One thing you need to watch out for is trucks and buses coming around the switchbacks. Also, there are many cattle that cross the road. And make sure to keep your gas tank full.
