Avice please: reconnaissance of retirement locales

Been lurking here awhile and have enjoyed and learned from the discussions. Would like to pose a question that will certainly help us but might help other lurkers too. Bride (of several decades) and I have decided we want to move to Mexico. Primary reason is we like Europe and miss the culture/lifestyle but could not afford to live there plus we want to be somewhat closer to family. Mexico seems to be a wonderful compromise. We’re retired with an adequate, steady, income --- not rich but comfortable.
By way of background to help you form an answer, bride is Belgian (now naturalized US citizen) but lived in Italy for many years and is fluent in several languages). I worked closely with Europeans at NATO for many years and traveled there a lot. We both love to live the country we are in and avoid the US enclaves and business chains except when we need “a touch of home” or to visit with close friends. Thus in Mexico, we would want to really be in Mexico (comfortable, not “roughing it”) but also have NOB type of resources available for occasional use. For instance, we would see ourselves shopping and eating at mostly at Mexican businesses with occasional stops at Sam’s et al. We’d like to live in the countryside but have a village not too far away for shopping, dining, Mass, sitting in the village square, etc. We do not want to live in a city/village proper. We’re not into extreme heat/cold and we do like to be able to see water sometime. Bride loves gardening and I like woodworking/tinkering…neither of us needs a lot of “entertainment” although concerts/museums are a plus.

Our plan is to leave NC sometime in Feb and spend a month (a little more if absolutely necessary) and sample the options. We will travel with a Suburban and 29 ft travel trailer thus we’ll need almost a week each way to just get to the border. We may have our dogs but we might (and prefer) to leave them with close friends/family for this trip. After seeing the options we would return to NC and confirm the desire to move SOB and pick the most likely locale. We would then sell out here and head south to rent/buy. We’ve read many of the books you folks have mentioned and done a lot of research on the RV Forums that cover Mexico.

Thanks for reading this far J. We would especially welcome suggestions on what communities to put on our itinerary based on our interests. Chapala, SMA, and Ajijac would be on the list but there are probably lots more? Once we develop a list then we can connect the dots and figure out the navigation issues (so we will probably be back with more questions!) Thanks in advance! Steve & Danièle

I knew AIM's first two editors and in my opinion, it's superbly researched -- first hand -- and very well written.

For quite a few years it was produced on my Macintosh. (I brought one of the first home computers to Guadalajara and offered DTP and design along with translations.) I remember the editor often chided me -- "You've got room for three more lines on each page. Let's give our readers more information!"

I don't know the new editor but I can certainly vouch for the content of the back issues.

On another note, you might want to contact the Belgian consul in Guadalajara. Our friendship goes back 25 years; we hung out when we were still single, gosh! She is deeply involved with Mexico and the community here, and she shares some of your wife's interests.

Based on your statement about wanting to live the country that you are in, I would suggest that you skip SMA, Ajijic, and Chapala, and look at places around Queretero, Zacatecas, Guanajato, Jalapa, and Veracruz City. In other words, look at places with relatively few Americans. At the very least, you should look at the a mix of places with and without lots of Americans. The AIM newsletter will talk about places with and without lots of Americans. I am kind of a city dweller, but there are lots of places worth consideration outside of cities.

I assume that you have the Church's book about RVing in Mexico.
