I don't know, Cynthia. In the limited time we've been here, all the butter we've tried seems far superior in taste to the run-of-the-dairy American butter we used to buy. (Typically, Mid-Am Dairy, bought at Sam's Club).
I suspect that the cream is cultured before churning, while the Mid-Am was not.
I haven't yet been paying much attention to the Mexican brands yet.

We have for years used Gloria brand unsalted. It comes in a green 1-lb box with four sticks, just like in the US. The salted Gloria butter is in a yellow box. It should be available in the dairy case of your favorite local mercado.
It is delicious and cheaper than butter NOB.

It's all a matter of taste. I prefer the strong flavor of salted Mexican butter and my wife, who is French, prefers the more refined and unsalted New Zealand butter which I find tasteless. We keep both types in our house at all times plus the I Can't Believe It's Not Butter light spread in the tub to spread on the German bread sold in Ajijic at outrageous prices. .

Another vote for the Gloria brand. I've seen it in a variety of presentations: a half-kilo block, a 225 gram block, individual sticks, the four-stick package, and a couple of other packages. It's made salted or unsalted, the unsalted being most common.

The packaging is paper. I buy the unsalted 225 gram block and store it in its original wrapper in a ziplock sandwich bag so that it doesn't take on other flavors from the refrigerator.

I prefer unsalted butter for cooking. When I use the butter on bolillo or other bread, I sprinkle salt to my own taste.

I use Gloria and have been pleased with it. It was brought to my attention that some Mexican butters have -in very small print...other fats added. I am NOB and don't know if Gloria has this on the label. What is the taste difference in using cultured cream or un cultured cream.?. Thanks for the info...

Yep - definately Gloria in the big block.

Like you, I also buy the unsalted - to control the salt content of what I am making.

Imagine the difference in taste beween sweet cream and creme fraiche. It's something like that.

I think for a future baking project, I'll make some all butter croissants with Mexican butter.
