taxi fares

Simon mentioning the taxi fares in Queretaro brought to mind -what are the "real"taxi fares in other cities. My maid in SMA pays 15 pesos in town and 20-25 when she goes to the Tuesday market out by Gigante. I was told by a Mexican friend who just bought a SMA taxi that it was 20 pesos around town. We pay double if we call for a taxi..the trip to pick you up and the trip to take you to your destination. What about the city or town you live in??

I have been in Morelia for about 4 months and have never paid more than 25 or 30 pesos to take a taxi anywhere in town. It seems quite reasonable especially going to the centro and trying to find a place to park or paying for parking fees in a garage.

Leon, Gto taxis are fairly expensive. From bus station to Plaza Mayor (a 10-15 minute drive) probably costs 50 pesos now. (This is a guess--I haven't done this trip in a while.) I used to live about 2 minutes from Plaza Mayor--about 2 kilometers--and taxis from my home to the Plaza Mayor cost 25 pesos.

Morelia seems to have a set rate of about 25-30 peosos in the downtown area. From Plaza Camelinas to the cathedral costs about that and this is a 45-60 minute walk. I have been cheated by Morelia drivers, so ask the fare before you get in.

This is such good info. Some of my friends visiting SMA and know no better can pay almost double the going rate. If they are from a metropolitan US city they think it is a good deal. I sat next to a man with GM flying into Leon and he said the fare from the Leon Airport to the Holiday Inn Express in Silao was $100 pesos but from the Holiday Inn to the Gm plant was $40 pesos.

I take cabs a lot when I am in other towns. I have found most drivers to be honest and very courteous. There are some in every town, however, that can't seem to beat up the tourists. In Morelia, Mexican friends visiting me were overcharged to go from my apartment to centro--so it is not just Gringos who are targeted--but we do stand out. San Miguel drivers have been making up their own fares for years. I have found that if you stand up to them, they will accept the correct fare rather than their inflated one.

On occasion they publish the true fares in the newspaper but as things change so do the fares. I believe best I can tell they have gone up recently to 20 pesos.

I've found that it's best to ask before getting in. Can't hurt, and saves an argument later. Visitors were charged 100 pesos for a ride to our house that should have been 20. One cabbie became notorious for this kind of thing. I heard that cab fares have been "unofficially" raised from 15-20 pesos to 20-25 for trips around town. This is where you begin to wonder whether everybody is quoted the same rates, or whether your appearance initiates a gringo tax. Mystery.

We paid $30 MXP yesterday to go from near Wal Mart to INAMI, in Col. Chapultepec Norte.
Our return, from Hospital de la Luz (actually, we were there to have almuerzo at Restaurante "El Huache" in front of the Hospital.) was $35 MXP. The return was by a cockamamie route, and took about 20 minutes. It WAS a busier time of day, though.

I think in Morelia there is a zone system--known only to the drivers--and the fare is supposed to be irrelevant of the time involved or route taken. JR might be able to clarify this, but I think she usually drives evrywhere.

Morelia does operate on zone fares, depending upon how many colonias are traversed. For that reason, a cab ride within a single colonia could conceivably be longer and cost less than one which crosses into another colonia. The details of the zone system have been published from time to time in Provincia and La Voz.

When I travel around in Mexico I am always surprised at the low fares I am charged in most places. I use pulmonias and cabs a lot in Mazatlan, since I don't own a car, and the price is just what the traffic will bear! When cruise ships are in town, which is often, the pulmonias will ask at least double the normal price. For short distances, where I know the price is always $20 pesos, I just give the driver that amount when I arrive home and never get an arguement. For longer distances, I ALWAYS ask and bargain before I get in. Or refuse the ride and look for another cab or even a bus. My muchacha still rides for a lot less than I do, as I suppose do all the locals. When I was going to the airport recently she came by to say goodbye and insisted on getting a cab for me and it was $50 pesos cheaper than I would have got! We are really gringoed in Maz when it comes to taxis. Yet, when I think what I pay in the USA, it's still a very good deal!

Opening my mouth in a cab in Queretaro usually adds 5 pesos to the fare. Usually around 25-30 pesos to most destinations in the city. Occasionally 35 pesos when we have the whole family packed in the cab!
