Can't Post | Private Reply
My wife & I will be traveling through mexico for a year.I have a question on crossing the border.I will be driving a motor home & towing a honda crv.We also want to bring a moped or small motor cycle with us.I understand the toll roads charge per axel. Will we be charged any extra for the motorcycle ? Also I understand the RV should be in one of our names & the truck in another. how about the motorcycle? There will be only the 2 of us. Can any one help? P.S. Sorry about the last post. My caps were stuck on. I now have a new keyboard. I hope I did not offend anyone. Thanx Tim & Sue

Maybe a motorcycle doesn't count, but there is a limit of 1 vehicle imported into Mexico by foreigners. Have you checked this out ? It would really stink to arrive at the border and have to dispose of one of your motor vehicles.

Sioux: It's one vehicle per person. The OP said he and his wife were coming. Two people = two vehicles. There is one little catch -- each vehicle must be registered by a different person, and the person registering the vehicle must have a credit or debit card in his/her own name. The same card cannot be used by two people to register two vehicles. If they don't have separate cards, one of them will have to post a cash bond.

When the wife and I entered Mexico with two vehicles. Both of the vehicles were registered in both our names. An either or situation. She entered with her vehicle using a credit card in her name and I entered with the other vehicle using a card in my name. We had no problems.

Hi Don, The registration I was referring to is the Mexican registration of a vehicle entering the country. Perhaps, "permit" would be a better, less confusing word.

I thought someone would have questioned this, but if you're entering on tourist visas (FMT), aren't you limited to 180 days before you have to at least exit the country and re-enter and get a new FMT? Or were you already planning that?

I researched this a couple of years ago for one person bringing a truck and a motorcycle. Which is basically the same as your case, that is, one more "vehicle" than the number of persons. What I found out wasn't definite, but that problably it could be done, if the motorcycle was an off-road type. That is no plate, headlight, turnsignals, etc. The advice I got was to remove the above items before crossing, and keep insisting "it is only for the beach". Since I was moving here, I abandoned the idea of buying the enduro-dirtbike in the states, and instead bought one here. If I were you I would contact one of the outfits that do RV caravans to México, and inquire further, as they might be the ones who know the true answer. If your moving here, I'd buy it here, as Honda Mexico makes a couple of small bikes not available in the US, that people in the states, in the know, would kill to get their hands on.

There was a post here a while back that said a motorcycle of less than 400cc was not considered a vehicle, over 400cc and it's a vehicle.

Is a Travel Trailer (RV) a "vehicle"? If my bride and I try to cross with a Suburban and a Travel trailer do we have to go through all this?

Does American Express count as a credit card?

So a Debit card counts as a credit card?

Thanks all for a WEALTH of info here.

Yes, a travel trailer (RV) counts as a vehicle. You will have to go through the importation process for your RV as well as the Suburban.

Each of you will be required to import one of the vehicles. The vehicles must be registered either in both your names or one of your names per vehicle.

Each of you must have a valid credit card in his/her name. If you try to import both vehicles using one credit card only, you will be refused.

If there is a lien on your vehicles (i.e., if you are making payments on them), you must have a notarized letter from your lienholder stating that you may bring the vehicle into Mexico.

I would not depend on a debit card. Some border crossings will accept only credit cards.

Yes, an American Express card qualifies as a credit card. But remember, you'll need two credit cards, one in each of your names.

A trailer is a "non'motorized" vehicle, and therefore one person can bring a car, truck, etc., plus a trailer. I have brought both RV trailers, and enclosed utility type trailers into Mexico on my own personal paperwork in addition to the vehicle towing them. Now that Rolly mentions the 400cc rule concerning motorcycles, I remember hearing that also, at the time of my research on the subject several years ago.

The original poster is bringing a motorhome, it sounds like, which is a motorized vehicle. If I were him, I would try contacting Mexican customs (through the nearest Mexican consulate) to find out about that motorcycle. I'd hate to get to the border and find out that I had 1 too many vehicles.

I believe a Motorcycle over 400cc (but don't quote me) is considered a vehicle of the purposes of getting the permit.

A moped could work on this assumption but not sure if they would then tax you on it...or just let you bring it in.

A trailer pulled behind a car is not a vehicle and considered a remolque. Remolques are listed the same car permit you will receive for the vehicle you are bringing across.

Thus, two vehicles (husband and wife have separate permits)

one trailer (OK)
moped (maybe)
